Old Testament Survey I Pentateuch
Purpose: To provide an overview of the first 5 books of the Old testament along with highlighting major points of study contained within.

OTS I - Overview The bible is broken into two major sections OT/NT
The whole of the accepted, harmonious scriptures we see today is know as “canon.” Canonical books total 66 from Genesis to Revelation. The Bible was written by approximately 40 authors, under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit. The Old Testament (39 books) provides all doctrines of Christianity and reveals the character of God. This sectional also chronicles the fall of man and lays out God’s plan for the redemption of His creation. 2 Timothy 3:16 provides our view for scripture.

OTS I - Overview All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness, that the man of God may be complete, thoroughly equipped for every good work. -2 Timothy 3:16-17

OTS I - Overview The Old Testament is divided into five major sections: Law – Pentateuch (5 Books) History – (12 Books) Poetry and Wisdom (5 Books) Major Prophets – (5 Books) Minor Prophets – (12 Books)

OTS I - Pentateuch Pentateuch, Torah, Law
Pentateuch literally means “five books.” First 5 of 66 books in canon. Written by Moses. Provides the first biblical account of creation. Primarily focuses on God’s character through his presence, works, commands and responses to man. Provides historical record from creation to around 1400 B.C.

Vocabulary: Bara – the Hebrew word for create; to bring into existence from nothing. Bereshith – A Hebrew word that means “in the beginning.” Elohim – the Hebrew word for God (also plural). Fiat – an authoritative order or command. Toledhoth – A Hebrews word meaning generations. Yom – The Hebrew word for day.

Rabbis referred to the book as “bereshith.” The book focuses on origins. The key word or theme for the book is “generations.”
