*PRAYER OF CONFESSION (unison)
Trustworthy Creator, holy Son, caring Spirit, our love for you is not as it should be.
18
Other “loves” and wants and desires compete for our energy, our time, our money. Too often we choose these other directions rather than you.
19
In your love you have called us your children, yet we admit that we stray from you and your call, turning to the ways of sin and bad choices.
20
Forgive us for our straying. Forgive us for choosing anything over you
Forgive us for our straying. Forgive us for choosing anything over you. Continue to love us and draw us into your kingdom.
21
(silence is observed for reflection and prayer)
22
ASSURANCE OF PARDON L: Sisters and brothers, let us begin anew to be the people God calls us to be: instruments of God’s love in this world. By the grace and love of God, know you are forgiven!
23
Thanks be to God! P: Thanks be to God! Alleluia! Amen!

SCRIPTURE READING: Genesis 22:1-18
PROCLAIMING THE WORD SCRIPTURE READING: Genesis 22:1-18
26
Genesis 22:1-14 The attempted sacrifice of Isaac.
From the United Methodist Website: Genesis 22:1-14 The attempted sacrifice of Isaac. Strong suggestion: Unless you are preaching on this text today as part of your ongoing series, do not read it in worship.
27
After these things God tested Abraham. He said to him, ‘Abraham
After these things God tested Abraham. He said to him, ‘Abraham!’ And he said, ‘Here I am.’ He said, ‘Take your son, your only son Isaac, whom you love, and go to the land of Moriah, and offer him there as a burnt- offering on one
28
of the mountains that I shall show you
of the mountains that I shall show you.’ So Abraham rose early in the morning, saddled his donkey, and took two of his young men with him, and his son Isaac; he cut the wood for the burnt-offering, and set out and went to the place
29
in the distance that God had shown him
in the distance that God had shown him. On the third day Abraham looked up and saw the place far away. Then Abraham said to his young men, ‘Stay here with the donkey; the boy and I will go over there;
30
we will worship, and then we will come back to you
we will worship, and then we will come back to you.’ Abraham took the wood of the burnt offering and laid it on his son Isaac, and he himself carried the fire and the knife. So the two of them walked on together.
31
Isaac said to his father Abraham, ‘Father
Isaac said to his father Abraham, ‘Father!’ And he said ‘Here I am, my son.’ He said, ‘The fire and the wood are here, but where is the lamb for a burnt-offering?’ Abraham said, ‘God himself will provide the lamb
32
for a burnt-offering, my son. ’ So the two of them walked on together
for a burnt-offering, my son.’ So the two of them walked on together. When they came to the place that God had shown him, Abraham built an altar there and laid the wood in order. He bound his son Isaac,
33
and laid him on the altar, on top of the wood
and laid him on the altar, on top of the wood. Then Abraham reached out his hand and took the knife to kill his son. But the angel of the Lord called to him from heaven and said, ‘Abraham, Abraham!’ And he said, ‘Here I am.’
34
He said, ‘Do not lay your hand on the boy or do anything to him; for now I know that you fear God, since you have not withheld your son, your only son, from me.’ And Abraham looked up and saw a ram, caught in a thicket by its horns.
35
Abraham went and took the ram and offered it up as a burnt-offering instead of his son. So Abraham called that place ‘The Lord will provide’; as it is said to this day, ‘On the mount of the Lord it shall be provided.’
36
The angel of the Lord called to Abraham a second time from heaven, and said, ‘By myself I have sworn, says the Lord: Because you have done this, and have not withheld your son, your only son, I will indeed bless you,
37
and I will make your offspring as numerous as the stars of heaven and as the sand that is on the seashore. And your offspring shall possess the gate of their enemies, and by your offspring shall all the nations of the earth gain
38
blessing for themselves, because you have obeyed my voice
blessing for themselves, because you have obeyed my voice.’ L: This is the Word of the Lord. P: Thanks be to God!

*HYMN “Trust and Obey” v.1
When we walk with the Lord in the light of His Word, what a glory He sheds on our way! While we do His good will, He abides with us still, and with all who will trust and obey.
41
*HYMN “Trust and Obey” v.1
Trust and obey, for there’s no other way to be happy in Jesus, but to trust and obey.
42
*HYMN “Trust and Obey” v.2

43
*HYMN “Trust and Obey” v.2
Trust and obey, for there’s no other way to be happy in Jesus, but to trust and obey.
44
*HYMN “Trust and Obey” v.3
Not a burden we bear, not a sorrow we share, but our toil He doth richly repay; Not a grief or a loss, not a frown or a cross, but is blest if we trust and obey.
45
*HYMN “Trust and Obey” v.3
Trust and obey, for there’s no other way to be happy in Jesus, but to trust and obey.
46
*HYMN “Trust and Obey” v.4
But we never can prove the delights of His love until all on the altar we lay, For the favor He shows and the joy He bestows are for those who will trust and obey.
47
*HYMN “Trust and Obey” v.4
Trust and obey, for there’s no other way to be happy in Jesus, but to trust and obey.
48
*HYMN “Trust and Obey” v.5
Then in fellowship sweet we will sit at His feet, or we’ll walk by His side in the way; What He says we will do, where He sends we will go; Never fear, only trust and obey.
49
*HYMN “Trust and Obey” v.5

*THE GREAT PRAYER OF THANKSGIVING
L: Lift up your hearts and spirits! P: We lift them up to the Lord! L: Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. P: It is right to give God thanks and praise.
60
L: We thank you, O God, for calling Abraham to be your servant and to bring your blessings to all the world. We thank you for then making a covenant, a deal, with Israel, promising to be Israel’s light and salvation. You made Israel your people, and promised that through them all the peoples of the world
61
would be blessed. We thank you that we are now your people, and that the covenant is now with us. We are grateful for prophets, apostles, martyrs, and everyone who has shared your life-giving Word; for the leaders who ruled with justice, for all who lifted up the poor and needy, and defended the people from
62
their enemies. With all those through the ages who have loved the Lord Jesus Christ, and with all who try so hard to serve him here and now, we join our voices in offering praise to you, the God who guides us in love: P: Holy, holy, holy Lord, God of power and might, heaven and earth are
63
full of your glory. Hosanna in the highest
full of your glory. Hosanna in the highest. Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord. Hosanna in the highest. L: In sending Jesus the Christ, the obedient one, you revealed to the nations how your love works. He preached and taught and followed your call.
64
He put total trust in you – trust even unto death
He put total trust in you – trust even unto death. For that we are deeply thankful. P: Praise to you, Lord Jesus: by dying, you destroyed sin and death; by rising, you offer us resurrection life. Lord Jesus, come again.
65
L: God of light, let your Holy Spirit move in power and love over us and over these earthly gifts of bread and wine. By our sharing of them may we experience the mystery of true communion of the body and blood of Christ, and may we become one in him.
66
The Lord’s Prayer (unison)

WORDS OF INSTITUTION

71
“Take this and eat it. This is my body, given for you
“Take this and eat it. This is my body, given for you. Do this remembering me and my example.” In the same way, as the meal ended, he took the cup from the table, and said,
72
“This cup I have here is the new covenant, new hope, which will be sealed in my blood; blood I will shed for you for the forgiveness of your sins. Whenever you drink it, remember me.”
73
Jesus tells us boldly: “I am the bread of life
