Overview of Private Sector Many organizations in the cluster support the success of the private sector. Many new companies spin out of University research. 3 Enabling Technology Photonics is an enabling technology that creates opportunity and advancements in industries such as aerospace, biomedical devices, and computers. Photonics is a lot like Rodney Dangerfield, it doesn’t get the respect it deserves. For example, NASA recently announced that the Kepler space telescope has allowed scientists to discover 1,284 planets outside of our solar system. That discovery was made possible by photonics!

5 Cool Colorado Photonics Achieve National Recognition
Boulder Nonlinear Systems (BNS) received the S.P.I.E Prism Award for Photonics Innovation in the category of “Optics and Optical Components” to recognize development of multi-stage Liquid Crystal Polarization Gratings (LCPGs) for non-mechanical beam steering (March 2016). Double Helix won the grand prize in the SPIE Startup Challenge with its 3D nanoscale imaging system that can image at the single-molecule level inside individual cells (February 2016). University Spin Out Double Helix selected as a finalist in the OSA Enabled by Optics Contest for 3D super-resolution imaging for use in disease discovery and drug development (February 2016). 6 KMLabs eXtreme Ultraviolet Ultrafast Source (XUUS4) named as SPIE Prism Award Finalist in Scientific Laser Category. XUUS4 enables ultrafast amplifier users to convert IR output to the Extreme UV (EUV) or Soft X-Ray region. Applications include EUV lithographic metrology, lensless imaging, and high spatial/ temporal resolution pump-probe experiments. (2016) University Spin-Out Research Electro-Optics was named a finalist in the Penton’s Aviation Week Program Excellence Awards under the Sub-System Production category for the Sniper Advanced Targeting Pod Vacuum Cell Assembly program (November 2015). Sporian Microsystems cited as a member of the Vehicle Integrated Propulsion Research (VIPR) team that received a National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) Group Achievement Award (August 2016).

There are 243 photonics companies in Colorado with fewer than 250 employees. 243 BOULDER 23.5% of the small companies are located in the city of Boulder ; 44.9% of the small companies are located in Boulder County. There are at 8,069 employees who work at companies that have fewer than 500 employees. 8,069 MANUFACTURING The primary function of 53.5% of the total companies is manufacturing.
