10. State Health Insurance Assistance Program (SHIP)
SHIP is a free, confidential & unbiased counseling service for Medicare beneficiaries of all ages to understand their health insurance benefits, bills & rights
Provides trained/certified staff & volunteer counselors; counselors offer in-person &, telephone assistance plus public presentations

11. Senior Medicare Patrol (SMP)
SMP –empowers & assists Medicare beneficiaries to prevent, detect and report health care fraud, errors and abuse through outreach, counseling and education
Medicare fraud - $75 billion a year

The Housing Unit - in conjunction with the Office of Health Care Quality, is responsible for monitoring small assisted living facilities in Howard County for compliance with state regulations

Fight Elder Abuse
Ombudsman – Help to resolve complaints made by or for residents of long term care facilities; the ombudsman educates consumers & long term care providers about resident's rights & good care practices
Guardianship – OOAI can be appointed to serve as the public guardian for persons ages 65 & older declared by the Courts to lack the capacity to make their own decisions; OOAI is appointed as last resort, when there is no one else willing or able to serve as the guardian
