FAIRTRADE By Maggie And Isabel

WHAT IS FAIRTRADE ? Fairtrade is a simple yet incredibly important idea – it’s all about giving the people who produce the things you buy a fair price for their work. This may seem obvious, but lots of people in poorer countries have to sell their goods at prices so low that they can’t make a decent living. Often only a tiny bit of the money you pay for something goes to the person who actually made it. This happens a lot when we import things from poorer countries.

CHOCOLATE Chocolate is a sweet indulgence for most of us . But for many cocoa farmers , the reality of the chocolate industry is anything but sweet. More than 70 per cent of the worlds cocoa is grown in tropical West Africa , where over 10 million people are dependent on cocoa farming for their income. Most villages lack basic services such as clean water and education . Villagers often have to walk for several hours a day to collect water and often this water is dirty, contributing to the spread of disease.

COFFEE Your rich cup of Fair Trade coffee can help farmers escape poverty. Most small-scale family farmers live in remote locations and lack access to credit, so they are vulnerable to middlemen who offer cash for their coffee at a fraction of its value. Fair Trade guarantees farmers a minimum price, and links farmers directly with importers, creating long-term sustainability. Through Fair Trade, farmers earn better incomes, allowing them to hold on to their land and invest in quality.
