IB: Language and Literature Test date: Friday, Sept. 26th, 2014

2 Part A: True/False – Multiple Choice (10 marks)
A series of 20 True/False – Multiple Choice questions. Each question is worth 1 half mark (0.5) each. These will be knowledge based questions that evaluate your understanding and absorption of Frye’s key ideas. The chapter number will NOT be indicated for each question. EXAMPLE: The language of the first level of the mind is the language of social participation. TRUE FALSE

3 Part B: Short Answer (20 marks)
Six short answer questions will be provided to you… You must answer FOUR of the six questions. Each question is worth 5 marks each, making Part B out of a total of 20 marks. It is expected that you write enough to earn 5 marks per question. Each answer should be a clear, well-structured paragraph that incorporates required knowledge from the text and addresses the focus of the question.

4 Part C: Passage Analysis (20 marks)
A passage from Northrop Frye’s The Educated Imagination will be provided to you on the test. Your job is to “comment on the literary features of the text, the main ideas, and how they relate to Frye’s argument as a whole.” You must write a long answer response to the prompt. It must be in paragraphs, full sentences, clearly-written, etc. It will be graded against the IB Passage Analysis Response rubric provided to you in class today.

Part A is out of 10 marks, and parts B and C are each out of 20 marks, making the test out of a total of 50 marks. Review each chapter, one-by-one. Make note of the key ideas, critical focus question, title origin, persuasive devices, significant quotations, etc. for each. Review your answers to the chapter questions and handouts provided to you by your classmates. Review the Rhetorical/Literary Devices handout. Practice: Complete a practice excerpt analysis.
