Rule 1: Use quotation marks before and after the words of a direct quotation. Trudy said, “My goodness! I’ve lost my hat!” Rule 2: Use quotation marks around one or more sentences spoken by the same person. “If I ever go back to Arizona. I will go to the Grand Canyon. It is so magnificent,” said Margaret.

Mom screamed, “Watch out for that car!” Rule 4: Single quote are used inside a set of quotation marks. “When the roller coaster started to climb the first hill, Bob yelled, ‘Mommy!, and I couldn’t stop laughing,” said Charles. Rule 5: Put a comma and period inside the closing quotation mark. “ I may forget a name, but always remember a face.”

What the reader feels is known as the mood. Tip: Don’t confuse tone with voice. Voice can be explained as the author’s personality expressed in writing. Tone = Attitude. Voice = Personality.
