Groundwater Pollution
2
Water covers 71% of the Earth’s surface
97.4% is salt water located in the oceans 2.6% is fresh water found in ice caps, groundwater, and surface water Only .014% is easily available for our use from lakes/streams/usable groundwater
3
Groundwater: Water that has entered the ground through the process of infiltration. The amount of groundwater depends on the material at or under the Earth’s surface and the amount of precipitation
4
Uses of Groundwater: Irrigation for crops *Largest Use
Water for Livestock Industries Public Service Mining Homes and Public Buildings *Smallest Use
5
What is an Aquifer? An aquifer is an underground storage of water. Sits above the bedrock (which cannot be infiltrated). Aquifers can be depleted with overuse.
6
Groundwater Pollution
25% of our drinking water comes from a groundwater source= WELLS Pollution Sources: 1. Sewage 2. Industrial Waste 3. Landfills 4. Agricultural Chemicals
