1 GLOBALink/HF Data Link
inkSM AMCPWGM1-WP20 GLOBALink/HF Data Link Program Update Prepared For: ICAO WG-M December 2000

2 GLOBALink/HF - Beginnings October 1998
3 ground stations San Francisco, California, U.S.A. Molokai, Hawaii, U.S.A. Reykjavik, Iceland 2 customers Cathay Pacific (1) B Lufthansa Cargo (5) MD-11F 1,007 kilobits of traffic passed At the start, the HFDL Service had three ground stations and 6 total aircraft using the system.

3 GLOBALink/HF - Now December 2000
12 Ground Stations San Francisco, California, U.S.A. Molokai, Hawaii, U.S.A. Reykjavik, Iceland Riverhead, New York, U.S.A Auckland, New Zealand Hat Yai, Thailand Shannon, Ireland Johannesburg, South Africa Barrow, Alaska, U.S.A. Krasnoyarsk, Russia Santa Cruz, Bolivia Guam As of December 2000, there are 12 ground fully operational ground stations deployed each operating with 2 transmitters, except for Iceland, which has three transmitters. The temporary station at Anchorage will be taken off the air in January 2001 and is not included in the 12 ground stations.

4 GLOBALink/HF - December 2000 Continued
20 customers Over 115 HFDL-equipped aircraft Aircraft added at rate of 2-3 per month since January 2000 Over 36,000 kilobits of traffic passed 91% increase in traffic since January 2000 There are now 20 airline customers using HFDL with 115 HFDL-equipped aircraft.

5 GLOBALink/HF Flight Tracks (9/00)
This maps, showing the flight paths of HFDL Customers, represents the performance data packets received from the HF Data Radios by ARINC. The colors represent the ground station that the aircraft was logged on to. Data is represented for the month of September.

6 GLOBALink/HF Coverage - December 2000
HF Ground Stations (12) Alaska Bolivia California + Guam (12/5) Hawaii Iceland Ireland New York New Zealand Russia South Africa Thailand Legend HFDL ground station Areas of Primary coverage Secondary coverage The green represents nominal coverage for the HFDL system. Stations added this year include: Krasnoyarsk, Russia; Barrow, Alaska; Santa Cruz, Bolivia; and Guam. ARINC completed its coverage of the polar flight routes with the installation of Russia and Barrow. Crews are currently installing the permanent TCI-530 antennas in Barrow now that the permafrost is solid. Krasnoyarsk is currently using Russian dipole antennas until the permanent TCI-530 antennas can be installed in the spring.

7 GLOBALink/HF Growth Trend
Increasing HFDL traffic.

8 GLOBALink/HF Uplink Performance (System Wide)
Block success and message success rates have held constant throughout the year. This is one indicator that the adaptive frequency management techniques employed by ARINC have supported communications as we approach the peak of the solar cycle. ARINC expects that the uplink success to improve with the installation of the 4 new stations late this year and

9 Service Enhancements North Polar coverage
Implemented October 2000 HFDL is the only data link available for North Polar operations Adaptive frequency management ARINC partnered with Radio Propagation Service, Inc. (RPSI) for adaptive frequency management RPSI algorithms optimize coverage by controlling the daily/hourly operating frequencies at all HFDL ground stations New Ground Stations Sites (1Q 2001) Bahrain Gran Canaria, Canary Islands Implement / Planned service enhancements include: * Coverage of polar routes achieved this year with Krasnoyarsk and Barrow * Implemented Adaptive Frequency Management (Modify frequency management tables for geomagnetic and solar storm activity) with RPSI (Radio Propagation Services, Inc. (John Goodman)). * New ground stations to be installed in Bahrain and the Canary Islands the first quarter of 2001.

10 GLOBALink/HF Coverage - March 2001
Legend HF Ground Stations (14) Alaska + Bahrain Bolivia California + Canary Islands Guam Hawaii Iceland Ireland New York New Zealand Russia South Africa Thailand HFDL ground station Areas of Primary coverage Secondary coverage Nominal coverage with final ground station configuration of 14 stations. Additional stations will be added as needed for to meet identified coverage / capacity requirements.

11 Service Enhancements ATS Validation
Trials begin December 2000 Participants NavCanada Continental Airlines Message set Waypoint position report via HFDL to CADS to NavCanada B configured for fully automatic generation and transmission of message - ADS Planned ATS applications Automatic Dependent Surveillance (ADS) Controller Pilot Data Link Communications (CPDLC) Implement through trials and demonstrations with HFDL-equipped aircraft in 2001 Service Enhancements contineud: * ATS validation trials in the North Atlantic to begin mid-December with Continental Airlines and NavCanada. These trials will be ADS only. * Expect to add additional applications in other regions in 2001 through trials and demonstrations with HFDL-equipped aircraft.

12 Service Enhancements Industry Standards HFDL Performance Monitoring
ICAO SARPS - Published RTCA MOPS - Completed, approval expected 12/00 MASPS - Planned completion 9/01 HFDL Performance Monitoring Begin performance evaluation by region with NATS ADS Trials Monitor / Track Avionics Performance Goal: Meet or Exceed customer / CAA requirements ARINC HFDL Points of Contact: Service Enhancements Continued: * RTCA MOPS to be presented to RTCA PMC in December * ARINC has taken the lead to complete the MASPS in 2001 * Performance monitoring and improvement a key goal for 2001 as ATS trials begin and the full ground station compliment is in place. The goal is to meet or exceed the customer and CAA requirements. Starting performance analysis by region.
