Cambridge Teacher Training
Qualifications From TKT to DELTA Start with about myself: Taught for Education Nationale for 12 years and was responsable pedagogique for the adult education sector in the Alsace Set up my own teacher training centre in Strasbourg in 2010 and obtained Cambridge accreditation to run all the Teacher Training Qualifications in Started out as ESOL Strasbourg and then when Cambridge changed their name from Cambridge ESOL to Cambridge Assessment, merging with CUP to form Cambridge English, we went national and became The ELT Hub and we operate now in Strasbourg, Lyon and Brest. My partner in France is the CCI of Strasbourg, Brest & Lyon. My academic background is a MA in Applied Linguistics from Leicester University in the UK. As we are the only centre in France offering all the Cambridge Te acher Training qualifications I have a good understanding of the features of each qualification and I believe it’s very important to make sure each applicant is in fact doing the course and the qualification thjat is best suited to them. I am myself a CELTA trainer. On my team I have three other permanent teacher trainers, and many freelance trainers I see my role here as being to support Syken College who are accredited by Cambridge to run some key Teacher Training exams, to let you know what Cambridge offers in terms of Teacher Training and to discuss with you what specifically you are looking for and what your plans are for your future as English teachers or Managers of schools. TKT to DELTA because this is the range. Let’s look at them in more detail. 1

to the world of internationally recognised qualifications in teaching
Welcome to the world of internationally recognised qualifications in teaching Cambridge qualifications are international and transportable. Advantage over national qualifications, which they don’t replace, but they offer an important complement the world over. The reputation of Cambridge university The quality control behind the qualifications and the Cambridge exams = reputation Tell anecdote of TOEIC Over 400 CELTA Teacher Training centres in the world for example. 2

What knowledge do teachers need?
Understanding different methodologies for teaching Able to use the ‘language of teaching’ How to select from a range of resources Effective lesson preparation Understanding of classroom management methods for different needs Classroom language Language of Teaching = metalanguage. Terminomlogy of the profession. Lesson plan, presentation vs practice activities; we need to understand these terms and their related concepts as teachers. Contract with a profession such as nursing. You wouldn’t trust a nurse who doesn’t understand the difference between a bandage and a gauze 6 6

TKT : The three core modules explained
Lesson planning and use of resources for language teaching TKT Module One TKT Module Two TKT Module Three Language and background to language learning and teaching Lesson planning and use of resources for language teaching Managing the teaching and learning process 7
8
TKT Module 1 Part 1: Concepts and terminology for describing language Part 2: Background to language learning Part 3: Background to language teaching Describing language: grammar, lexis, phonology and functions Describing language skills and sub-skills, e.g. reading for gist, scanning Factors in the learning process, e.g : Learner characteristics and needs Differences between L1 and L2 language learning The role of error Motivation Exposure to language and focus on the form of language. Presentation techniques and introductory activities Practice activities and tasks for language and skills development Assessment types and tasks . . Terminology already creeping in Learner needs: very different to teaching children to adults Which do you think is more difficult? 8
9
TKT Module 2: Lesson planning and use of resources
for language teaching ng Part1: Planning and preparing a lesson or a sequence of lessons Part 2: Selection and use of resources and materials Select assessment activities Selecting aims Identifying components of a lesson Planning a lesson and sequence of lessons Choosing assesment activitieses Coursebook materials Supplementary materials Aids appropriate to learners and aims . Knowing how to chart a path for your learners Knowing how to use the resources at your disposal, not just turning the page 9
10
TKT Module 3: Managing the teaching
and learning process ng Part1: Teachers’ and learners’ language in the classroom Part 2: Classroom management Select assessment activities Appropriate teachers’ language Functions of learners’ language Categorising learners’ mistakes’ language Categorising learners’ mistakes teacher roles grouping students correcting learners giving feedback appropriate to learners and aims . Teacher’s language. A particular challenge when you don’t feel very confident about your own level of English. Who hear has heard of ‘grading your language’? Why is this important? My experience in Guyane observing teachers who only have a B1 level themselves 10

CELTA and ICELT 11 11 The gold standard in TT certification
Existed since the 1970’s. First developed by IH. Then known as the Royal Society of Arts certificate in ELT. Cambridge acquired it in the 1990,s and it became the CELTA: Certificate in English Language Teaching to Speakers of Other Languages. Not just adults. A mis-conception Sister is ICELT: International Certificate in ELT. Back in the 70’s CELTA only offered in London and it was assumed that the ICELT would be the qualification most taken up outside the UK. This distinction no longer holds as we shall see 11 11
12
CELTA 1 most widely recognised initial qualification for English language teaching to adults Main focus is teaching practice – 6 hours 4 includes written assignments and 6 hours’ observation of practising teachers practising teachers originally designed as initial training for people with very high level of English (C1/C2) who want to work in language schools worldwide – although many practising teachers working in a range of contexts also take CELTA 2 5 Over 1,500 CELTA courses a year all over the world. The gold standard in certificate level training for teachers of English.ver 1 The big difference with the TKT is the practical component. Describe 3 6 typically 4-week intensive course or part-time course 12 12

CERLTA is changing. First development. More and more non ‘core country nationals’ are taking CELTA cambridgeenglish.org/teaching-english/teaching-qualifications/celta/ 13
14
ICELT 1 modular course for practising teachers of any age group whose level of English is B2 or above Typically offered part-time alongside teachers’ work. practising teachers Teaching Practice assessed in candidates’ own classeser 1 Module One – Language development and awareness for teachers 2 5 Module Two - Teaching Rated at a higher level than CELTA on its theoretical content. Wonderful programme because it builds in an element of language development for the teacher. What is B2? How do you know if you’re B2? Ask audience…. The fact that the TP is in the teachers’ own classes means that it’s a qualification that’s fine-tuned to the specific context of the teacher. What if you teach large university classes for example? That’s not the same as teaching small groups of 5 – 10 adults in an evening class. Module Three - Methodology 3 6 14 14

The benefits of spreading out beyond the 4 weeks. I don’t have an ICELT testimony here but I do have someone who can describe the benefit of adding just one extra week cambridgeenglish.org/teaching-english/teaching-qualifications/icelt/ 15

DELTA The ‘highest’ level of the Cambridge English Teaching Qualifications SYKEN College is accredited to run DELTA Module One exams. A big advantage; opens up access to the highest level qualfication Cambridge English can offer 16 16
17
An overview of DELTA three free-standing modules
candidates can take any or all three in any order each module is separately assessed and certificated. FLEXIBLE I don’t recommend changing the order 17
