INTERNSHIPS The department of Student Engagement & Career Development contracted with a documentary company called In The Telling to film stories from employers, alumni, faculty, and students about how to find, prepare, and be successful in a job. All of this filming culminated in creating online modules and video series that can be used in and outside the classroom to teach career education concepts. Hear from students, employers, and faculty on why internships are important

Edge Internship Readiness Program
What is Edge? The Edge Internship Readiness Program is designed to empower students with the resources and skills needed to successfully land that coveted internship. Students attend a series of workshops and supplemental labs over six-weeks focused on topics employers consistently cite as critical in the areas of leadership and career preparation. In our competitive economic climate, it is imperative for students to be equipped with real world experiences such as internships before entering the work force. Article is hyperlinked

Internship Readiness Programs
Program Logistics Marketing & Registration Staffing Partnership Employer Sponsorship Marketing: the program has a page on our website. We outreach to campus partners at the beginning of the month school returns (January and August). Outreach to students begins two weeks prior to school starting. Marketing consist of flyering around campus, tv screen advertisements, and . We also partner with other programs across campus that use Edge as a avenue to meet their larger program requirements. Registration: Students register on the Career Development website and are tracked through the CSM. Registration is open for a month Staffing Partnership: The program is a collaboration with Leadership programs. A Career Development and Leadership staff member facilitating the sessions. Last year, our departments merged to create the Student Engagement & Career Development. Employer Sponsorship: We utilize employer event sponsorships to fund the program for staff time, printing of materials and an employer-hosted lunch during the last session. In return, the employer’s logo are included on any marketing material, the webpage and are invited to week 6. The employers join the students in an elevator pitch activity and complete a Q&A session. Edge Internship Readiness Program
Assessment & Data Retroactive Assessment on CampusLabs Results What are some limitations or challenges of assessing program information? “I feel exceptionally more prepared and confident in my search after completing Edge.” – Preston, Junior, Business Administration “I learned more about where and how to look for internships as well as improving my elevator speech.” – Luis, Junior, Industrial Engineering Assessment: we use Campuslabs to the completing students a retroactive assessment including demographic information, free response, and a pre and post confidence scale Results: every semester the students participating in Edge have had 100% increase in confidence after participating in the program. Challenge: Assessing longer-term impact. Currently assessment only report the student who found an internship, part time job or full time job during the 6-week span. We do not promise placement, nor do the employers sponsoring the event. 100% Reported Now Having The Skills To Prepare For Future Internships Reported Learned More About The Internship/Job Search Application Process Of Students Increased Confidence

Limitations Campus size Resources (monetary, staff etc.) Time Attrition rate What are possible limitations for creating an internship readiness program at your institution? How can you be innovative and modernize an internship readiness program that meets the needs of your students? Campus size Resources (monetary, staff etc.): employer event sponsorship Time: delivering content heavy curriculum in 6 weeks while including active participation and engagement. Edge is held twice over the lunch hours and once after 5pm on a Tuesday and Wednesday. Attrition rate: On average we have had 200 students register each semester, half the students continue past the first two weeks and half of those students complete the requirements and earn a certificate.

Week 1: Welcome & Goals This week we will provide an introduction to the Edge Program as well as to the internship search and application process. We will identify skills desired by employers and review effective SMART goals. Resources and Handouts: SMART Goals Internship Resource List, Job Application Log Sheet - used in Week 3, Resume Module - Complete before workshop next week, Resume Outline Example, Resume Fill-In Worksheet - if you have not yet started a resume. Week 2: Resume We will identify qualities and elements of an effective and professional resume. We will allow time to create or re-write concise and engaging descriptions of your experiences. We will also briefly define the purpose of a cover letter and identify needed components Resources and Handouts: Resume Module Worksheet, Resume Checklist, Resume Action Verbs, Instructional Cover Letter Example, Cover Letter Checklist, Cover Letter Example Supplemental Activity: Resume Lab- We provide Resume Lab hours every day all year around.

More Details Week 3: How to Search
This week we will be covering strategies regarding how to best conduct an internship search process. Activities will include identifying key words to enter into search engines and how to use social media platforms to leverage your search. Resources and Handouts: Job Search Log Sheet (excel file), Internship Search Tips and Tricks Worksheet, Monthly Budgeting and Apartment Comparison Grid worksheets Supplemental Activity: Faculty Fellow Come network with our Faculty Fellow, Faculty Fellows work to effectively involve students in research, collaborative projects, career-readiness efforts and community outreach. Supplemental Activity: 'How to Search' Lab Hours- Come drop in to meet with our Career Coach to further your search for an internship! This is an opportunity for you to have hands-on practice of the internship search strategies covered in this week's workshop. Week 4: Pre Interview We will review important materials and actions to prepare prior to an interviews; including: appropriate attire, research a company’s values and workplace culture and creation of questions to ask during an interview Resources and Handouts: Interview Module - complete before workshop next week, Interview Guidelines Supplemental Activity: StrengthQuest- Complete a free StrengthQuest assessment. Discover and develop your strengths for greater academic, career, and personal success

More Details Week 5: Interview
This week of the Edge is focused on effectively answering different types of interview questions, discussing the "post-interview" and follow-up process, and helping you articulate how you will continue to improve your interviewing skills. Resources and Handouts: Interview Guidelines, InterviewStream Self-Evaluation Supplemental Activity: InterviewStream- complete a mock interview using the service InterviewStream. This will take approximately minutes and can be completed online anytime. Week 6: Networking with Employers We will write, review and practice elevator pitches. We will have an open Q&A session with local employers. Resources and Handouts: Elevator Pitch Worksheet Supplemental Activity: Prepare for the Fair. PLAN- Organize your job and internship search, get tools to help you understand yourself and the job market, and prepare your career fair game plan. POLISH - Be able to articulate who you are and what you can do, when it counts. Practice demonstrating what makes you uniquely you.
