Technical Terms Design: Drafting: Design Portfolio:
a plan or convention for the construction of an object or a system (as in architectural blueprints, engineering drawing, circuit diagrams and sewing patterns) Drafting: is a formal graphic language (universal language) understood by people of different nations. regulated by the (CSA) Canadian Standards Association and (ANSI) American National Standards. Design Portfolio: collection of drawings and sketches used to present, construct or report on design process. 10/15/2017

Drafting Equipment Drafting Pencils: Scales:
hard pencils (2H, 3H, 4H, 5H)….light lines; soft pencils (2B, 3B, 4B, 5B)…..darker and wider lines. Scales: a measuring instrument. can be used to prepare to a variety of reduced and enlarged sizes. CADD (Computer Aided Drafting and Design: AutoCAD, 3DMAX, Civil, Revit, Inventor

Artistic vs. Technical Artistic Drawing: Technical Drawing:
freehand representation….provide realistic impressions of object not critical on details Technical Drawing: drawing instruments or computers are used rather than freehand. provides precise and complete descriptions of the shape details of objects.

Types of Technical Drawings
Layout Drawings Presentation Drawings Detailed Working Drawings 10/15/2017
7
Types of Technical Drawings
Design Layout Drawings: are design sketches prepared by Engineers, Architects, and Designers. purpose is to show how a product or part looks, fits or operates under working conditions.
8
Types of Technical Drawings
Presentation Drawings: normally used as a selling feature or in presenting final design Provides an overall view of the object usually drawn three dimensional to give a realistic visual description of the part. do not contain a lot of detail
9
Types of Technical Drawings
Detailed Working Drawings provides details necessary to make the part (shape, size, and specification). used by professional craftsmen. These drawings are thoroughly dimensioned for construction purposes

LINE TYPE DESCRIPTION Footer Text 10/15/2017 Construction Lines
thin light lines used to construct or layout of objects these lines can be easily and quickly erased Object Lines thick dark lines used to indicate the visible features of an object. Projection Lines construction lines that are used to project the feature of objects from one view to another Hidden Lines thin black lines consisting of 3 to 4 mm long strokes and 1 to 2 mm spaces used to indicate hidden features of an object Centre Lines thin black lines that has breaks that consists of one short stroke used to indicate the centres of cylindrical objects and features Phantom Lines thin black lines that has breaks that consist of two short lines used on isometric assemblies to illustrate assembly Section Lines thin black lines usually drawn at 45 degrees they indicate the solid areas of a part that are imagined cut through to obtain a sectional view Dimension Lines thin black lines used to indicate the dimensions of an object Extension Lines thin black lines used to extend the features of an object to a convenient place on a drawing for dimensioning purposes Leader thin black line used to indicate the part of the drawing to which a note refers.
