2 main functions:
Protection – protects the cell from the outside environment
Regulation – controls what can enter and exit the cell
a. He is selectively permeable: permeate is a fancy way to say “pass through.”
b. maintains homeostasis
1. homeostasis = state of equilibrium in the body

9. C. Structure Cell membrane is an organelle made up of biomolecules.
Phospholipids make up the majority of the cell membrane
a. Hydrophilic heads (polar) are made of phosphates (Phospho)
b. Hydrophobic tails (nonpolar) made out of fatty acids (Lipid)

c. To protect the hydroPHOBIC tails from water, they form a bilayer which keeps the tails inside and the water- loving heads outside.

11. Protein molecules bring materials into the cell and receive signals from outside the cell
a. ex: glucose, amino acids, ions, and water
b. O2 and CO2 can pass through freely
Carbohydrate molecules (attached to proteins or lipids) have antenna to help cells identify or recognize other cells
Cholesterol (lipid) that is found in the fatty acid tails helps the cell membrane maintain it’s flexible shape.
