A R Balaskandan (violin)
Shriya Iyer (vocal) Shriya Iyer started her musical journey at the age of 4 and since 2010 has been a disciple of Smt. Bhargavi Balasubramanian. She began her initial learning from Smt. Vidya Subramanian. Shriya has given performances at several prestigious platforms including Albany, Chennai and at the OVK aradhana in Minneapolis, Minnesota. She also had the great privilege of giving vocal support to her Guru, Smt. Bhargavi Balasubramanian at the Albany Hindu temple. She has won prizes at CMANA and in the local Albany talent competitions as well. Shriya Iyer has a passion for music in all forms, be it Western, Carnatic or Bollywood and is a regular performer in the local orchestra circuit. Shriya is currently a senior at Shaker High School and will be attending the University of Pennsylvania this fall. A R Balaskandan (violin) A.R. Balaskandan is a performer and teacher of Carnatic Violin. He began his basic training in both Violin and Mridangam at the age of six. He received his formal training in Violin from Sri. Sarweswara Sarma and obtained his teaching degree. He has been under the guidance of Smt. T. Rukmini of Chennai for the last 12 years. He is a disciple of Guru Karaikudi R Mani on Mridangam. Balaskandan is based in Manhattan and performs and teaches in the tri-state area. He has accompanied established international artists and dancers and has performed in prestigious venues including the Lincoln Center, Juilliard School of music, Smithsonian Institute, Krishna Gana Sabha and the Queen Elizabeth Hall. Balaskandan is the founder and lead artist of Akshara, a Carnatic inspired band based in NY. Sriram Ramanan (mridangam) Sriram, at the age of 6, started his mridangam tutelage under Srinivas Manthena, son of renowned mridangist Sri Venkateswara Rao from Hyderabad, India. In 2008, Sriram was introduced to Kumbakonam Saravanan who helped him excel in the art of kunnakol. By late 2008, Sriram had the privilege of learning from “Yuva kala Bharathi” Dr. Ravi Balasubramanian. Shri Ravi Balasubramanian further instilled in Sriram, the nuances of percussion and the art of Carnatic accompaniment. Sriram continues to learn and receive mentorship from his beloved Guru to further expand his knowledge in the art of Carnatic percussion. Sriram is a research associate at Yale University. He completed his undergraduate at Quinnipiac University with a degree in Health & Biological Sciences.
