4 The Scramble for Africa

5 Task 1: The Scramble for Africa
Read the document and answer the questions. You have 15 minutes to do so.

6 Task 1: The Scramble for Africa
Name 3 things that motivated Europeans to invade Africa: What was the problem with how Europe created the borders of Africa? What are some ways in which European treatment of Africa was unfair? What are some ways in which Europe helped African countries? How would you describe the overall effects of Imperialism in Africa?

7 Notes: The Berlin Conference
Europe was growing concerned by the threat of a European War. When the brand new nation of Germany decided to start her own empire in 1882, it concerned the rest of Europe.

8 The Berlin Conference All of the great powers of Europe decided to meet to settle the problem of Africa. In Berlin—without a single African present—they chose who had claim to which territory. No Africans were given the right to their own country.

9 The Berlin Conference Britain was the big winner.
Their claims over almost 1/3 of the continent were confirmed. France also took large territories— though most of their territory was the Sahara Desert. These territories would be sold off to British and French companies for mining, timber, and coaling projects. Very little of the money would stay in Africa.

10 Task 2: Resistance to Imperialism
You and a partner (or on your own) will select one of Four wars of resistance against Imperialism: The Anglo-Zulu War The Maji Maji Rebellion The Matabele War First Italo-Ethiopian War Answer the following questions: Where/when did this take place? Between which powers? Why did the conflict start? What was the result of this conflict?
