3 Transformational Air Traffic Management
Leverage improvements to enable Trajectory Based Operations (TBO) Current Ground-based radar surveillance Uncertainties dictate conservative separation minima Waypoint based navigation Positive ground based voice control Limited use of automation Aging infrastructure Transformational Satellite-based surveillance and navigation (GPS) More precise knowledge of A/C location allows safe reduction in separation minimums Digital non-voice communication and shared networking Collaborative and dynamic operations with more control to the cockpit

4 Satellite Based Systems’ Leverage Airplane Capabilities
Communication Controller to Pilot Datalink Communication (CPDLC) Broadband Global Aircraft Tracking Global/Polar Coverage Navigation Required Navigation Performance (RNP) GBAS Landing System (GLS) CAT I/II/III Airport Moving Map (AMM) Surveillance Automatic Dependent Surveillance Broadcast Out & In (ADS-B) Space-based ADS-B Out Cockpit Display of Traffic Information (CDTI) Enhanced Ground Proximity Warning System (EGPWS) System Wide Information Management Weather & Information Management Onboard Network System

5 Satellite Based Systems Impact TBO Capability
Traditionally, aircraft use high-frequency radio to report their position when crossing oceans. Satellite-based datalink communications have improved this, boosting accuracy and frequency. The next step is one many airlines have already taken: installing systems called Automatic Dependent Surveillance - Broadcast or Contract (ADS-B and ADS-C). These help an aircraft to accurately report its position and share it with other nearby aircraft, and it creates the possibility of allowing flights to travel closer together. Airlines can reduce cost per passenger kilometer by flying more direct routes at more efficient altitudes and speeds with uninterrupted climbs and descents. Upgrades require technology, procedures, training, culture

6 TBO Benefits Enhanced Surveillance Persistent Communication
Space Based ADS-B provides precise airplane locations Allows for radar like coverage in oceanic and remote areas Persistent Communication Aircraft Access to SWIM (AAtS) Data Comm to integrate Airplane, Airline Operations Center, and Air Traffic Controller Performance Based Navigation RNP/RNAV enroute RNP AR and RNP established for terminal areas

7 Enabling Airplane Capabilities to Deliver Environmental Benefits
Trans-Atlantic and Trans-Pacific Routing using ADS-B In-Trail Procedures* Trans-Atlantic, Average fuel savings 670 lbs, CO2 savings 2096 lbs Trans- Pacific, Average fuel savings 521 lbs, CO2 savings lbs Optimized Approaches using RNP at Major Airports Fuel savings from 400 to 1200 lbs, CO2 saving 1251 to 3753 lbs Overall Reduction and displacement of noise for community benefits Optimized Landing using GLS** Higher approaches reduce flyover noise by 1-4 db Fuel Saving up to 50lbs, CO2 saving 156 lbs Saved globally if every flight was one minute shorter Tons of fuel saved per year Tons of avoidable CO2 emissions per year 1-4 dB quieter Noise reduction from improved operations Seattle Greener Skies * FAA ADS- ITP Operational Flight Evaluation, Economic Benefits Analysis Report, December 2015 **Compared to convention ILS landing with 3 degree glideslope

8 Transformation Requires Collaboration

9 Our Commitment Unlock Airplane capabilities via Satellite Based Systems Support Airlines and ANSPs to extract fuel, emission, and noise savings, reduction in pilot/controller workload, and safety benefits Collaborate with ANSPs, Airlines, Airports, and Regulators to understand, and transition to satellite systems Engage in support of a System of Systems approach for successful implementation

10 “We are embarked as pioneers upon a journey where it behooves no one to dismiss any novel idea with the statement it can’t be done” - Bill Boeing
