Leveling Resource leveling is a way to fix resource overallocation. Generally, resources are leveled in two ways: By delaying a task until the assigned resource has time to work on it. By splitting a task so that part of a task is done when planned and the rest of it is done later when the assigned resource has time.
5
Leveling Overallocated Resources
The basic how-to: On the Tools menu, click Level Resources, and then choose the leveling options you want. Click Level Now. 2013 – Resources – Level All

Leveling Overallocated Resources
If you don’t see any overallocated resources, make sure “Day by Day” is selected here: So, if it’s a more finite value, Project won’t bother highlighting the person in red, if, let’s say, they’re overallocated by an hour….

Determines priority. ID Only: numerically higher ID numbers get delayed first (i.e. items you entered later in the project. Standard delays tasks according to their predecessor relationships, start dates, task constraints, slack, priority, and IDs. Priority, Standard… (next slide)

Leveling Overallocated Resources
“Priority, Standard” uses Task Priority – a numeric ranking between 0 and 100 that indicates the task’s appropriateness for leveling. Tasks with the lowest priority are leveled or split first.

Leveling Overallocated Resources
Level only within available slack A good thing, if you don’t want Project to extend the project finish date. If it’s okay to extend the project finish date, clear this check box.

Leveling Overallocated Resources
You might still see some people in red, even though their overallocation icons have disappeared. They’re overallocated hour by hour or minute by minute, but not day by day.
13
Leveling Overallocated Resources
Leveling can adjust individual assignments on a task It’ll delay work for the resource, or split work, that is, if you’ve got the next checkbox also checked, “Leveling can create splits in remaining work.”
14
Leveling Overallocated Resources
Once you’ve got all of your settings selected in the Resource Leveling dialog box, click Level Now. It’ll ask you if you want to level selected resources or the entire pool. Choose one, and click OK.
