2 Phase one: The Ottoman empire
Ottomans rule Arab Territories, including Palestine. Disputes religious, not national.

3 Israel and Palestine Palestine now consists of Israel, West Bank, and the Gaza Strip. Claims: Jews: land claim dates back 3,000 years when Jewish Kings ruled the region Palestinians: Land belonged to them since the Jews were driven out around A.D. 135.

4 Phase two: British rule
Britain oversees area after Ottomans fall. Jewish-Arab Conflict over Palestine (Arabs) Israel (Jews) Balfour Declaration, 1917 – Establish home for Jews in Palestine.

5 Phase three: Israel 1948-1967 Holocaust UN, US recognize Israel

6 Palestine liberation organization
PLO, 1964 Arab League To champion and control Palestinian nationalism.
