2016 CALENDAR YEAR END REVIEW

INJURY AND FIRST AID SUMMARY
24 OSHA Recordable and non Recordable Injuries in 2016 18 Service Department 4 Parts Department 2 Sales or CSR What makes an injury recordable? How do we get this information? The safety department obtains pertinent information regarding each injury from the accident/injury report filled out by the departmental managers. Information is also obtained about the severity of the injury from the Medcor report. It is imperative that all accidents, and injuries are reported right away in order to make sure that each employee receives the proper medical attention. We also want to eliminate the potential for any future incidents or injuries by conducting an accident investigation to eliminate the root cause.

OSHA RECORDABLES There were 15 OSHA recordables for the dealership in 2016 These included: Fractured and broken toes Hand and finger lacerations Eye injuries (foreign object) Concussions Head lacerations Back, neck, should strains Bicep tears Dislocated shoulders The top picture was an injury sustained from a metal cover which fell from a shop crane. An routine inspection of the crane had been done, but if a daily inspection had been performed at the beginning of each workday, this injury could have been prevented. The employee suffered a concussion in addition to having staples used to close the wound. The second picture was caused by a 400 lb shelving unit being dropped on the employee’s foot. Luckily, the employee was wearing his safety shoes, thus preventing a worse injury such as an amputation.

COSTS ASSOCIATED WITH WORKPLACE INJURIES
Lost time 48 Days away 489 Days of restricted duty This equals 2.41 full time employees gone all year NOTE: When an employee is off work due to a workplace injury (workman’s comp) Stotz pays the employee’s regular salary. Their salary is charged to “NON REVENUE LABOR”.
6
COMMON CAUSES OF WORKPLACE INJURIES
A common denominator between these injuries: All Injuries occurred in time periods that the shops had overtime. When there is perceived pressure to get something done it triggers a stress response. Employees are more likely to take the following actions: Shortcuts Overconfidence (Complacency) Poor, or lack of housekeeping Starting a task before getting all necessary information Neglecting safety procedures Mental distractions Lack of preparation
7
INCIDENT PREVENTION All employees share the responsibility to help avoid incidents and keep the workplace safe. The following practices will help you minimize the chances of a workplace incident. Watch for unsafe working conditions or other hazards, and report them immediately. If you have ideas for improving safety, please communicate them with your supervisor. Do not take shortcuts! Perform every task using safe, approved methods. Before beginning a task, be sure that you are wearing the proper PPE (personal protective equipment). Practice good housekeeping. Always store materials and equipment to their proper place after use. When a spill occurs, immediately follow clean-up procedures. Avoid horseplay and other potentially dangerous behaviors and discourage others from engaging in them.

OTHER INCIDENTS Stotz incurred 13 Vehicle insurance claims in 2016.
How can we help reduce our rate of auto insurance claims? Look far ahead: Most accidents could be avoided if people would have better situational awareness and planned ahead by looking as far down the road as possible. Get the big picture: Don’t forget about your mirrors! Check your mirrors ever few seconds. It only takes a fraction of a second to get a clear picture of your surroundings.
9
OTHER INCIDENTS CONT. Have an escape plan: Unfortunately, you are forced to share the road with people who don’t take driving safely seriously. Leave yourself an out in case the worst happens. Maintain a proper following distance: At a MINIMUM, during dry weather conditions, you should have at least 2 seconds of space between you and the vehicle in front of you (3 seconds is better). Just drive: Unintended driving distractions will occur on a regular basis, but that doesn't mean you have to put yourself or others around you in danger. If something distracting happens, there's only one thing you've got to do. Drive. That's it – just drive! Don't worry about anything else.
10
MEDCOR If an injury should occur, unless it is a life or death 911 emergency, your first call should be to our MEDCOR nurse triage program. (800) With Medcor Injury Triage, injured employees can speak over the phone with a specially trained nursing professional the moment after an injury occurs. The telephone triage nurse will assess the injury’s severity and make recommendations for the best course of action. This may be self care with instructions or referral to a designated occupational clinic. They may also refer employees to the nearest emergency center if needed. Triage services are provided 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
