5. Types of Opportunities
Paths to funding:
Responding to a sponsor-published solicitation
Submitted in response to a specific work statement from the sponsor for specific research, development, or training projects or to provide specific services or goods.
Submitting an unsolicited or investigator-initiated proposal
Initiated by the applicant and submitted according to the sponsor’s broad priorities or guidelines.
Roughly 50% of NSF and 80% of NIH research funding is awarded this way.
These are best done after building a relationship and vetting the concept with a program manager.
Each agency has a different process, but it usually begins with a concept paper.
DOE (energy) has a guide for unsolicited proposals.
NSF has Dear Colleague Letters and a process in their Proposal and Award Policies and Procedures Guide.
NIH has Parent Announcements

10. Tips for Searching for Funding
Develop an array of relevant search terms.
Utilize keywords, categories, or tags found within the database.
Familiarize with your most likely sources and search often.
Sign-up for alerts with PIVOT, Grants.gov, agencies, GRC, etc.
Don’t dismiss the unlikely sources (think outside the box).
Remain open-minded as you search.
Vet the funding alert/solicitation before acting on it.
Consider collaborating (join internal groups such as CIRG, utilize Faculty Commons, reach out to your Research Coordinator)

Faculty Alerts
GrantSearch is designed exclusively for GRC member campuses to allow the user to search the funding opportunity database using five criteria: (1) academic subject; (2) activity; (3) funding sponsor; (4) deadline month;  and (5) keyword. More information about each criteria can be accessed by clicking on the  query icons located throughout the GrantSearch interface.   The GrantSearch database contains over 1,500 funding opportunities that support academic activities such as research, education, training, fellowships, program or curriculum development, and/or equipment acquisition. Most programs are cyclical (funded every year) and cater to national or large regional audiences. Many are geared to institutional capacity building, faculty development or postdoctoral training. The database also includes opportunities for undergraduate and graduate students. The goal of GrantSearch is to provide GRC members with access to all the Federal cyclical grant programs,  as well as other Federal and private foundation programs of general interest that make a significant number of awards.

“Deadlines” – a monthly funding opportunity alert that provides 90 days’ notice of federal and private application deadlines
