3 Chemical Equations All chemical reactions have two parts:
Reactants - the substances you start with (analogous to the ingredients needed to bake a cake). Products - the substances you end up with (the cake). The reactants turn into the products. Reactants  Products

4 Chemical Equations In a chemical reaction:
The way atoms are joined is changed. Atoms aren’t created or destroyed. Can be described several ways. In a sentence: Copper reacts with chlorine to form copper (II) chloride. In a word equation: copper + chlorine  copper (II) chloride In a chemical equation: Cu Cl- CuCl2

5 Balancing Chemical Equations
Balanced Equations: Atoms can’t be created or destroyed. All the atoms we start with, we must end up with. A balanced equation has the same number of each element on both sides of the equation. The way atoms are joined is changed.

6 Balancing Chemical Equations
Rules for balancing: Write the unbalanced equation; the correct formulas for all the reactants and products (know the diatomic gases). Count the number of atoms of each type appearing on both sides. Balance the elements one at a time by adding coefficients (Hint: start with the most complicated molecule). Check to make sure it is balanced. Be sure to indicate states.

7 Balancing Chemical Equations
Never: Change a subscript to balance an equation. If you change the formula you are describing a different reaction. H2O is a different compound than H2O2 Never put a coefficient in the middle of a formula 2 NaCl is okay, Na2Cl is not.

8 Summary of Reaction Characteristics
Synthesis – one compound is formed from many simpler materials – A + B  AB Decomposition – one compound is broken down into simpler compounds or elements – AB  A + B Single Displacement – A + BC  B + AC Double Displacement – AB + CD  AD + CB Combustion – oxygen involved in producing energy, Products are CO2 & H2O
