1 Have you completed a BGS?
How to Complete a Curriculum Worksheet for the Bachelor of General Studies Created by Academic Advising Services of Northwestern State University of Louisiana February 2016

4 Bachelor of General Studies Curriculum Sheet
On the next slide we’ll look at the worksheet overall. Then we’ll look at how each section relates to one another. Finally we’ll fill in a curriculum worksheet for Sally Jo Thomas. Sally Jo falls under the Fall 2012 Catalog. To access the Curriculum Worksheet, please visit: and click on “Degree Checklists”

5 Two-Page Curriculum Worksheet – General Overview

6 Relationship: General Education & Concentrations
The upper half of the left column represents the university core that all students must complete to earn a bachelor’s degree. The lower half of the left column represents other requirements. The right column upper half lists the groups of concentrations. By completing the Core Requirements you also fulfill all but 9 hours of the Social Science concentration.

7 Confused? Though it may seem a little confusing at first, the BGS degrees allows a student to explore his/her interests while letting him/her complete a bachelor’s degree

8 Declared Concentration and Minor
Most students will chose their minor from the same area of their concentration. You are allowed to “double-dip” and use some classes in more than one area. Later, we will see such an example from Sally Jo’s courses.

9 Curriculum Worksheet Example: Sally Jo Thomas
Let’s look at Sally Jo’s coursework Sally Jo is a junior Bachelor of General Studies student who has taken a variety of courses Sally Jo has declared a concentration and minor in Social Science

16 Filling in the Curriculum Worksheet – Step 4 & 5
Sally Jo has most of the basic areas completed. She still needs to complete 3 hours of a computer literacy course. Now we need to see if she has completed her concentration and minor. Both are Social Science

17 Filling in the Curriculum Worksheet – Steps 4 & 5
In general, the concentration requires an additional 18 hours with 12 hours at the 3000 level or above. The Social Science minor requires 27 hours in the social sciences with six hours in one field of social science and nine semester hours at the 3000 level or above.

20 Filling in the Curriculum Worksheet – Step 6
At this point we know that Sally Jo has completed both her concentration and minor requirements. Now that the first page is completed, we can work on the second page. Here we will fill in the 3000/4000 level courses.

21 Sally Jo Thomas Step 6: Fill in all of the 4000 level courses first; then fill in the other courses. SOC 4080 Fa 06 C SOC 4500 Su 08 A CJ 3350 Su 04 A CJ 3370 Fa 04 B SOC 3040 Su 07 B SOC 3090 Sp 06 A

22 Filling in the Curriculum Worksheet – Step 7
Now we will fill in her remaining courses under the electives. While these courses do not fulfill a requirement per se, they do help you reach the goal of 120 hours.

23 Step 7: Fill in the Electives courses.

24 Final Evaluation Sally Jo has completed a total of 91 hours.
As the BGS program requires at least 120 hours, Sally Jo must complete at least 29 more hours. Looking back at her curriculum sheet we see that she needs to take: 3 hours of a computer literacy course 9 hours of 4000 level electives 18 hours of 3000/4000 level electives TOTAL: 30 hours
