1. We made a cake to help us understand the layers of the soil.
Rock and Soil Layer Cake
We made a cake to help us understand the layers of the soil.

2. As part of our learning about rocks and soils we decided to make a cake that showed really clearly the different layers.
Our cake needed to have: a bedrock layer,
a sub soil layer,
a top soil layer and
a top layer of grass

3. First we made the bedrock using melted chocolate, syrup, butter, biscuits, sultanas and rice crispies.
We put the mixture in the fridge to cool. After it had been in the fridge the chocolate became solid again.

4. Next we made a sponge mixture
Next we made a sponge mixture. We added chocolate chips to represent the rocks and large stones found in the subsoil.

5. Meanwhile the group making the layer of topsoil added cocoa powder to their sponge.
We used an electric whisk to make it a bit easier to mix.

6. Both the sub soil layer and the top soil layer went in the preheated oven at 180˚ for about 25 minutes.

7. Once all the cakes were cooked and cooled we were ready to build our layers.

8. We brushed the cakes with apricot jam to keep them together.
Then we made the buttercream icing. We added green food colouring to make it look like grass.

9. Finally we spread the icing over the top of the cake and used a fork to make the icing look more like grass.

10. We were very pleased with the finished cake
We were very pleased with the finished cake. We thought it was a great way to learn about the layers of rocks and soil beneath our feet.

11. And it tasted delicious!
