SPAIN’S 2009 PROGRAM I Goals: To increase the international visibility and prestige of the most competitive Spanish campuses. To promote strategic aggregations Better students, professors and researchers (Talent) To foster and consolidate the strengths of the Spanish University System through the improvement of the university campuses. SPAIN’S 2009 PROGRAM II Evaluation Criteria: Teaching improvement. Scientific improvement Knowledge transfer Development of an integral social model Adaptation to the European Higher Education Area (EHEA) Interaction with the territorial environment Proposals CEI 2009 51 strategic plans coming from 50 universities (84% of public & 30% of private). 18 plans were selected to be evaluated by an International Commission in a second phase Universidad Autónoma de Madrid

The International Commission selected a total of five campuses for the award of International Campus of Excellence (CEI): UAM-CSIC CEI (Universdad Autónoma de Madrid – CSIC) Barcelona Knowledge Campus (University of Barcelona and Polytechnic University of Catalonia) University Campus of La Moncloa (University Complutense of Madrid and Polytechnic University of Madrid) AB-CEI Knowledge and Innovation (Autonomous University of Barcelona) Campus Carlos III (University Carlos III of Madrid) Universidad Autónoma de Madrid

2,500 teaching staff and 34,000 students It has a very strong research activity One of the best-placed Spanish universities in international rankings. CSIC (Spanish National Research Council) Spain's most important research body The UAM's campus hosts four CSIC institutes and five mixed UAM+CSIC institutes, with a research staff of more than 2,000. Three aggregation levels First level: Research/Academic integrating: UAM's different research departments and institutes. CSIC institutes in the Campus IMDEAs (Madrid Institutes for Advanced Studies) for Nanoscience, Food and Social Sciences University Hospitals Centros Nacionales de Investigaciones Oncológicas (CNIO) and Investigaciones Cardiovasculares (CNIC) Centro de Investigaciones Energéticas, Medioambientales y Tecnológicas (CIEMAT) Universidad Autónoma de Madrid

Second level: knowledge transfer with the main stakeholders being: The Parque Científico de Madrid (PCM), a leader among Spanish science parks Local business associations: AICA, ACENOMA, FEMAN, ASEYACOVY Large companies with an ongoing cooperation with UAM, particularly on the endowment of Company Chairs Universidad Autónoma de Madrid
