3 What is news? “What is news? It is information only.” - Walter Cronkite, former CBS News anchor The news peg (新闻题材) Decide what makes your story newsworthy (the same story can be newsworthy or not depending on whether you’ve found the right cut-in point)

4 Three types of news writing
新闻报道 News report: Hard news news of the day. It is a chronicle of current events/incidents Soft news This is a term for all the news that isn't time- sensitive 新闻特写 News feature

5 Structure of News writing
Headline – tells what the story is about 标题 Byline – shows who wrote the story Lead – tells the most important facts (5 W’s) 导 语 Body – contains more information and details 主体 Ending – gives something to think about 结语

6 The lead ---- what your readers need to know most?
One of the most important elements of news writing is the opening paragraph or two of the story. Journalists refer to this as the "lead," and its function is to summarize the story and/or to draw the reader in (depending on whether it is a "hard" or "soft" news story). In a hard news story, the lead should be a full summary of what is to follow. It should incorporate as many of the 5 "W's" of journalism (who, what, where, when and why) as possible. e.g. "Homeless youth marched down Yonge St. in downtown Toronto Wednesday afternoon demanding the municipal government provide emergency shelter during the winter months." )

9 Who lead Not so good… Principal Joe Blow announced Tuesday that students will no longer be allowed to leave campus for lunch due to excessive tardies. Better… President Barack Obama will make a brief appearance at the high school Thursday after giving a speech at the County Expo Center.

10 When lead Not so good… On Tuesday Principal Joe Blow announced that students will no longer be able to leave campus for lunch. Better… On Saturday President Barack Obama will speak to the senior class about how important community organizing and volunteering are to the country.

11 Where lead Avoid where leads Maybe … probably yes.
At the school board meeting on Tuesday, Principal Joe Blow announced that he has ended the off-campus lunch policy. Maybe … probably yes. In the principal’s office, the senior class dumped 30 pounds of sand to protest the cancellation of the senior trip to Cancun.

12 How lead Through a grass roots voting effort, senior Gilbert Castillo won the mayoral election to become the youngest mayor in the city’s history.

13 Why lead Because they wanted to carry on the tradition, four seniors streaked across the football stadium during the homecoming pep rally wearing a paper leis and tennis shoes.

14 What lead The Harry Potter series and Lord of the Rings series will be removed from all school libraries this fall.

15 In a soft news story, the lead should present the subject of the story by allusion. This type of opening is somewhat literary. Like a novelist, the role of the writer is to grab the attention of the reader. (e.g. "Until four years ago, Jason W. slept in alleyways...") Once the reader is drawn in, the 5 "W's" should be incorporated into the body of the story, but not necessarily at the very top.

16 The 7th China Shanghai Arts Festival ends with success
Accompanying the beautiful rhythm of "Swan Lake", the month-long 7th China Shanghai International Arts Festival came to the close. The closing ceremony took place at Shanghai Grand Theatre on Nov 18th. The vice executive director of organizing committee of festival, Yin Yicui attended the closing ceremony, with vice director of organizing committee, vice mayor of Shanghai, Yang Xiaodu presided the ceremony.

17 The body The body of the story involves combining the opinions of the people you interview, some factual data, and a narrative which helps the story flow. In this style of writing, you are not allowed to "editorialize" (state your own opinion) in any way.

18 Transitions Can be fact, indirect quote or a partial quote.
VERY, VERY IMPORTANT. Hold the story together. Link the paragraphs together. Can be fact, indirect quote or a partial quote. For example - FACT TRANSITION: (lead) Former Republican presidential candidate John McCain will speak to seniors Friday about his experience as a prisoner of war. (Direct Quote)“Seniors will learn a lot about duty and commitment when they hear Sen. McCain,” Principal Ike Sumter said. “We are so excited that he agreed to come.” (Fact Transition) During the Vietnam War, Sen. McCain was a prisoner of war for five years.

19 Transitions Can be fact, indirect quote or a partial quote.
For example - INDIRECT QUOTE TRANSITION: (lead) Former Republican presidential candidate John McCain will speak to seniors Friday about his experience as a prisoner of war. (Direct Quote)“Seniors will learn a lot about duty and commitment when they hear Sen. McCain,” Principal Ike Sumter said. “We are so excited that he agreed to come.” (IQ Transition) Sumter said he was moved after hearing Sen. McCain speak about his imprisonment.

20 Transitions Can be fact, indirect quote or a partial quote.
For example - PARTIAL QUOTE TRANSITION: (lead)Former Republican presidential candidate John McCain will speak to seniors Friday about his experience as a prisoner of war. (Direct Quote)“Seniors will learn a lot about duty and commitment when they hear Sen. McCain,” Principal Ike Sumter said. “We are so excited that he agreed to come.” (Partial Quote Transition) Sumter said he “had tears in his eyes” when he heard Sen. McCain speak about his imprisonment.

22 Bo Xilai's wife Gu Kailai arrested for Neil Heywood's murder
Gu Kailai, the wife of Bo Xilai, one of China's most powerful Communist party leaders, has been arrested for the murder of British businessman Neil Heywood.

23 Heywood, 41, a British businessman based in Beijing, was found dead last November in a hotel room in Chongqing, the city ruled over by Mr Bo and his wife. On Tuesday, the Chinese government said a fresh investigation into his death is under way, and that the existing evidence strongly points to Gu Kailai, Mr Bo's 53-year-old second wife, and Zhang Xiaojun, "an orderly at Bo's home". The pair have been "transferred to judicial authorities on suspected crime of intentional homicide", said a statement on Xinhua, the official Chinese news agency. The maximum penalty for murder in China is death.

24 A separate statement meanwhile said Mr Bo, 62, had been suspended from the Politburo and from the Central Committee and is under investigation for “serious discipline violations”, spelling the end of his political career. Neither Mr Bo nor his wife have been seen since mid-March. An editorial in the People's Daily, the newspaper that the Communist party uses to communicate to its cadres across the country, said Mr Heywood's death was a "serious criminal case" and that "Bo Xilai's actions have seriously violated the party's discipline, caused damage to the party and to the country, and harmed the image of the party and the country”.

25 Things to avoid in all news writing
Editorializing - Keep your opinion out of the story Using first and second person - Keep yourself out of the story. Common error “our school” Missing the news peg Paragraphs too long Trying to use all of the information

26 What went wrong? During the school year, our school has reported 22 fights so far. Last year, the school had 18 total fights. “One of my friends got in a fight, but he didn’t start it. He was defending himself,” said freshman Andy Opel. In response to the escalating fights, the school district hired the Teen Conflict Resolution Team to help students solve disagreements through non-violent solutions. After March 23, any student caught fighting on campus must complete a TCRT non-violence workshop, in addition to normal disciplinary actions. “Students have to learn how to solve life’s problems without violence, and this program will teach our students just that,” said Mr. Brown. “Now students will get suspended and be forced to attend this program,” Opel said. “That’s just too much.” Lead not most recent. spelling of opel Full id of brown. 27 News feature A news feature explores an issue. News features are less time-sensitive They can be an effective way to write about complex issues too large for a hard news item. Features are full of interesting people, ideas, color, lights, action and energy. Storytelling at its height! A good feature is about the people in your community and their struggles, victories and defeats. A feature takes a certain angle and explores it by interviewing the people involved and drawing conclusions from that information. The writer takes an important issue of the day and explains it to the reader through comments from people involved in the story. Hint: Remember to "balance" your story. Present the opinions of people on both sides of an issue and let the readers make their own decision on who to believe. No personal opinions are allowed. The quotes from the people you interview make up the story. You are the narrator.

28 Optional task Work in groups, interview people on a topic that’s both interesting to you and newsworthy, write a news feature of about words.
