2 The Story of Saint Andrew (30th November)

3 Why does the Scottish flag have an X shaped cross on it?
Questions for today: What is a disciple? Why does the Scottish flag have an X shaped cross on it? Why is Andrew the patron saint of Scotland?

4 Andrew was one of Jesus’ first disciples.
Who was Andrew? Andrew was one of Jesus’ first disciples. Does anyone know what a disciple was?

5 How did he become a friend of Jesus?
One day Simon (named Peter) and his brother Andrew were fishing on the lake when Jesus called to them. He said, “Follow Me, and I will make you fishers of men.”  Matthew 4:19 Andrew was already a friend of John the Baptist and had heard about Jesus. When Jesus called him he immediately left his nets and followed Jesus. Andrew became one of the twelve disciples.

6 How do we know about Andrew?
We know that Andrew was one of Jesus’s disciples because we read about him in the Gospel. Andrew was very sad when Jesus died. He wanted to tell everyone about Jesus. He travelled to lots of countries including Russia and Greece.

7 Some people were cross with Andrew for teaching about Jesus.
Who do you think this is a picture of? Who might this be?

8 Andrew was tied to a big wooden cross with ropes until he died
Andrew was tied to a big wooden cross with ropes until he died. He asked for it to be a different shaped cross to Jesus as he didn’t feel worthy of dying the same way. What do you notice about this cross? Andrew carried on talking about Jesus for two whole days before he died. He is said to have died on November 30th.

9 How did he become the patron Saint of Scotland?
Many years after St. Andrew had died, a man called Regulus had a dream which told him to carry the bones of St. Andrew to the end of the Earth.

10 Scotland was so far from Greece that Regulus thought it was the end of the Earth.

11 His boat landed on the East Coast of Scotland
His boat landed on the East Coast of Scotland. He buried St Andrew’s bones and built a church on top.

12 Today there is a town at that place called St. Andrews.

13 The Scottish people made Andrew their Patron Saint and chose as their flag a Saltire Cross on a sea blue background. The cross is the same shape as the cross that he died on.

14 Questions for today: What is a disciple?
