How does the writer use language and structure to show _____________________. Support your views with reference to the text. (6 marks) POINT Identify an aspect of language or structure that has been used & refer to the question 1 mark EVIDENCE Quote where that aspect of language or structure has been used EXPLANATION Analyse the language or structure – explain how it shows what the question has identified. Write 2 of these PEE paragraphs – one for language and one for structure Example: The writer uses language to show that Moll is worried when she says, ”I now had such a load on my mind”. This metaphor shows that Moll is burdened with the knowledge that she is her husband’s sister and is concerned about it.

Example: Evaluate how successfully the writer creates sympathy for Moll in the extract The writer uses hyperbole in the first sentence to create sympathy for Moll, “I was now the most unhappy of all women in the world”. This exaggeration of Moll’s emotional state shows us just how desperate she is. The use of the phrase ‘most unhappy’ shows that Moll is being quite dramatic about her situation, which suggests that she must feel very hopeless. This is successful in making us feel sympathetic towards Moll because she is clearly in a lot of distress and we want her to feel better. The writer attempts to___________________________. Evaluate how successfully this is achieved. POINT Identify where / what technique the writer has used to do what the question refers to. Question 5 will ask you to think about a specific scenario and write about it. ie. When you were frightened, or when you tried to hide something EITHER *5 Write about a time when ______________________________________ Your response could be real or imagined. (Total for Question 5 = 40 marks) *OR 6 Look at the images provided. Write about a ____________________ experience. Your response could be real or imagined. You may wish to base your response on one of the images. (Total for Question 6 = 40 marks) *Your response will be marked for the accurate and appropriate use of vocabulary, spelling, punctuation and grammar. You only need to answer ONE of these questions In both questions you can base your writing on something that has happened to you, or you can make it up 40 marks = 40 minutes You need to read through your work VERY carefully to check SPaG. Leave enough time for this at the end. Question 6 will give you the opportunity to base your answer on one of the images provided, but you don’t have to. Equally, you CAN also use the images for Question 5

Use the 5 senses: Sight What can you see? Explain without saying exactly what it is. Sound What can you hear? Smell What can you smell? Touch What can you feel? Think physically AND emotionally. Taste What can you taste? Think real and metaphorically. Use Descriptive Techniques Literary Techniques Metaphors/Similes/Personification Alliteration/Assonance Onomatopaeia Vocabulary Interesting adjectives and adverbs Use SPaG Correctly Take your time to write properly Check your work VERY CAREFULLY Create Imagery All of these tools will help you to create effective imagery, which will: Engage your audience Immerse them in your writing Make your writing more interesting And… GET YOU MORE MARKS!

Compare how the writers of Text 1 and Text 2 present their ideas and perspectives about _____________________________________________________________. Support your answer with details reference to the text. (14 marks) Compare how the writers present their ideas and perspectives about intelligence agency work Both writers’ perspectives about intelligence agency work is that it is hard. In Text 1 the writer talks about how hard it is to get a job in the service, ”Up to 80% of applicants fail the application form”. The statistic “80%” shows that very few people cross the first hurdle of application. In Text 2 the writer talks about how hard his specific job is, “After slogging away for 24 hours without the slightest success”. The word “slogging” suggests this work is not only hard, but also quite boring. Writer 1 talks about the application process and uses statistics to show how tough it is, while Writer 2 uses interesting vocabulary when explaining the day-to-day work in his own job and how hard he finds it personally. POINT Identify how the ideas and perspectives of the writers are similar/different. EVIDENCE Quote from both texts to show this similarity/difference. EXPLANATION Analyse the quotes by explaining how they show the writers’ ideas and perspectives as identified in your point. Use Single Word Analysis (SWA) LINK Link to the question by saying how this shows that their ideas and perspectives are similar/different AND the techniques the writer has used to present them.

USE THIS AS YOUR PLAN – EACH POINT = A PARAGRAPH. You can add another paragraph of your own ideas. You need to read through your work VERY carefully to check SPaG. Leave enough time for this at the end.

18 P2 Section B: Transactional Writing
Forms of Writing: You will be asked to write in a specific form for a specific audience. The form could be any of the following: Formal letter You MUST lay it out properly and use the appropriate greeting and signing off. Newspaper article Use a headline, short paragraphs starting with a summary paragraph, include interviews with witnesses, etc. but DO NOT write in columns or draw pictures! Magazine article As above Speech Address your audience directly. Use persuasive techniques and pauses, etc. Diary entry Start it with a date, time and place. NOT ‘Dear Diary’! Information Leaflet Write information in small chunks. Do not attempt to lay it out like a leaflet. You must use the rules and conventions of that form properly. You can revise these at: Audience When writing for a specific audience, you need to consider the following: Register – how formal or informal does the writing need to be? Vocabulary – what types of word are suitable for the audience? Do I need to use any specialist vocab? Use SPaG Correctly Take your time to write properly Check your work VERY CAREFULLY
