Explain the course of care required for patients who are determined to have sepsis.

3. Sepsis Sepsis is a life threatening complication of an infection
It may include:
Inflammation
Organ dysfunction and failure
Death

4. Why Sepsis
Over 800,000 patients will develop sepsis each year in the USA, over a quarter of them will die from sepsis.
Sepsis is an incredibly expensive illness to treat since half of the patients who develop sepsis will require intensive care. It now is the most expensive condition for which people are hospitalized.
Not only is it the 11th leading cause of death, but over a third of patients who survive sepsis are so debilitated that they require long-term care afterwards

6. Early Detection is Key Super SIRS Criteria
Suspected Infection AND
TWO OR MORE OF THE FOLLOWING
Temperature >38.3 or <36.0 C
Systolic blood pressure <90mmHg
Pulse >120
Respiratory rate >24
New unexplained altered mental status

7. Time is of the Essence Every hour delay in recognition and treatment
Increases Mortality by 8%

8. Once Patient Meets Criteria
Notify:

Patient’s Covering Team

9. Activate the Nursing Per Protocol Orders

11. Activate the Nursing Per Protocol Orders
Get IV if needed

Draw Lactate
Draw Cultures
Start 500ml NS IVB

12. Patient Disposition Transfer to a higher level of care
Antibiotics ordered within the hour.

13. Tracking All patients activations will be tracked by Life Safety RN’s
Time to complete bundle will be tracked and shared with team.

14. SEPSIS POWER HOUR Here is what YOU can DO Super SIRS Criteria
Requires 2 or more:
Temp < 36.0 or > 38.3
SBP < 90 mm Hg
RR > 24
HR > 120
New Unexplained Altered Mental Status
SEPSIS POWER HOUR
One hour delay in recognition and delay of the 3 hour bundle
Increases Mortality by 8%
