Hypothyroidism. A. Primary hypothyroidism results from failure of the thyroid gland and causes low plasma thyroid hormone levels. There is loss of negative feedback on thyrotropin-releasing hormone (TRH) and thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH) secretion. B. Secondary hypothyroidism results from the failure of the anterior pituitary to secrete TSH and causes a lack of stimulation of thyroid hormone secretion. High TRH levels result from loss of negative feedback on the hypothalamus. T3, triiodothyronine; T4, thyroxine.
