What is College Credit Plus?
College Credit Plus (CCP) is an initiative created by the Ohio Legislature which began in the school year. It mandates that students in grades 7-12 have the opportunity to take courses where they can earn College Credit and High School Credit concurrently. Similar courses were offered in the past as students were able to take college courses through Post-Secondary Enrollment Option (PSEO). Also, high schools had partnered with local colleges and universities to provide “dual credit” courses on high school campuses. CCP streamlines these two entities under one unified program, with standardized rules and procedures for schools and universities to follow.
3
How does a student become eligible to take College Credit Plus courses?
School Eligibility: Any student in grades 7-12 is eligible to participate as long as they meet a university admission’s requirements. College/University Eligibility: To be accepted by a college/university, a student must show they are college- ready. Each university will have their own guidelines on what determines college readiness. No college/university may place different admission requirements on CCP students they have than they have for any other prospective student.
4
How does my student apply to take College Credit Plus courses?
North Union High School process: Any student interested in taking CCP courses must turn in a letter of intent to his/her counselor by April 1, 2017. College/University process: Each university will have its own application process to admit students to their CCP program. The high school guidance office will be able to help students navigate the myriad of requirements. Most college deadlines are near or on May 1st.
5
How much does it cost for my student to participate in College Credit Plus?
High school costs: a high school can only charge a student for the cost of a CCP course if they fail or withdraw from the course. Public University costs: A public university cannot charge a student who takes CCP courses. Private University costs: A private university may charge a discounted amount to a student who takes CCP courses.
6
What College Credit Plus courses are offered to NUHS students?
There are three types of CCP courses: CCP courses taken at a university with a university faculty instructor (formerly known as PSEO courses) CCP courses taken on the high school campus with a university faculty instructor (Early College Program with Marion Technical College) CCP courses taken on the high school campus with a high school instructor *Note: Students are not permitted to take remedial or religious courses
7
How does College Credit Plus work into my student’s school day?
Classes taken at NUHS – For CCP courses offered on the NUHS campus, courses are scheduled into a student’s eight period school day just like any other high school course. Classes taken on a college campus – For courses taken on a college campus. Students need to take into consideration travel time to attend and return from their college class. Courses must fit into the student’s high school schedule. A student is not permitted to schedule a CCP course which would conflict with a high school course on their schedule. If a change in bell schedule causes a conflict with a scheduled college course, the student will be excused from their high school course in order to attend.
8
How many College Credit Plus courses can my student take?
A student cannot take more than 30 semester hours in one school year. For each regular (non-CCP) high school credit a student takes, 3 semester hours are subtracted from the 30 allotted semester hours for the school year. On the next slide is a chart that shows how many semester hours a student should enroll in for a semester as determined by the number of NUHS classes they are taking that semester. STUDENTS MUST BE ENROLLED IN A MINIMUM OF FIVE HIGH SCHOOL CREDITS TOTAL FOR THE SCHOOL YEAR PER STATE LAW.
9
*A student may not take more than 120 semester hours total between grades 7-12
Number of semester classes taken at NUHS (not including study halls) MINIMUM number of CCP semester hours you MUST take this semester MAXIMUM number of CCP semester hours you MAY take this semester 12 15 1 10 13.5 2 8 3 5 9 4 7.5 6 7 4.5
10
College Credit Plus courses are available in summer school!
Credits are applied to the high school and college transcripts in the fall semester. The semester hours are subtracted from the students’s 30 semester hour eligibility. Example: a 4 hour class in summer = 26 remaining for the year. Students and parents are responsible for scheduling the classes. Check with the college and university for the application and scheduling deadline. Many colleges and universities begin summer sessions in May – may overlap with NU’s schedule. Keep in mind: summer courses are more condensed and move at a quicker pace than regular school year courses. Summer school does not count towards athletic eligibility.
11
What College Credit Plus courses should my student take?
The State of Ohio requires school districts to work with their partner colleges/universities to create CCP course “pathways”. These pathways are meant to help provide assistance to students and families when determining which CCP courses to take. NUHS will have several different pathways set up with Marion Technical College. It is important to note that all Pathways are simply suggestions. They are not required courses, nor are they guaranteed courses. Course availability will vary greatly depending on a student’s high school schedule and extra-curricular obligations (school activities, etc) Please see list of potential pathways in the CCP handbook.
12
What NUHS subject area and classes will my student receive credit in when taking CCP classes?
Please refer to the academic subject chart in the CCP packet CCP classes DO count towards the credit requirements of an Honors Diploma. Some CCP courses can replace the new end of course assessments for the class of 2018 and beyond: -CCP classes in biology, American History, and American Government will replace the requirement to take end of course exams in those subject areas. -However, students will HAVE to take end of course exams for English 9, English 10, Algebra 1, and Geometry even if they are taking these course equivalents via CCP in lieu of the NUHS course *subject to change as the state works towards finalizing the testing requirements
13
How many high school credits are CCP classes worth?
A student earns both high school credit and college credit when taking a CCP course. Earned high school credit is placed on a student’s transcript and factors into a student’s GPA in the same manner as all other high school credit. CCP classes can also count towards athletic eligibility. There is a chart on the next slide for converting CCP credit to high school credit (both in terms of transcripted credit and athletic eligibility)
14
Credit Conversion CCP classes:
1 semester hour = .33 high school credit (.67 toward eligibility) 2 semester hours = .66 high school credit (1.33 toward eligibility) 3-5 semester hours = 1.0 high school credit (2.0 toward eligibility)
15
How do I know if my CCP credits will transfer to another college/university?
There is no simple answer to this as many universities have their own rules and procedures in accepting transfer credits. Here are some basic guidelines to keep in mind about the transferability of college credits: -Per Ohio law, all Ohio Public Universities must accept credits from other Ohio Public Universities (i.e. MTC, OSU-M, Columbus State). However, credits transferred from one public university to another will not necessarily fulfill the credit requirements of a specific major, even if it is from a similar department; and may be counted as elective credit. -Private universities do not have to accept transfer credit from other universities, nor do public universities have to accept credit from private universities. However, most universities in Ohio (public and private) will accept transfer credit in general education courses and other common freshman credits. -The more academically selective a private university is, the less likely they are to accept transfer credit. It is recommended for students to keep a copy of any college course syllabus for transfer reasons.
16
Transferring credits:
-MOST IMPORTANT: When visiting a university, check with their admissions office to see if the college credit earned will be transferrable. Check the following websites: These websites will show what college credits are transferable and where they are transferable to. While these websites are very helpful, they do not provide an exhaustive list of very transferable credit for every university. It is important to communicate with the admissions office for your university about the transferability of CCP courses.

What are the advantages and disadvantages of taking College Credit Plus courses?
Students have the opportunity to take courses that may not be offered by NUHS. Students have a chance to experience college-level work and college life prior to making a final decision about post-secondary education. Students can take classes that academically challenge them or cover areas of particular interest to them. Students and parents can use this opportunity to involve high school counselors or principals in their education and career planning Students can take college courses for both high school and college credit.
18
What are the advantages and disadvantages of taking College Credit Plus courses?
If a student withdraws from a course after the deadline or fails a course, the student will be responsible for the cost of the course. If a student fails or withdraws from a college course, it may affect credits he/she needs to graduate. Students will have increased responsibility for learning. Students may have reduced opportunities or time for participating in high school activities (athletics, choir, band, etc) or part time employment. Student’s grades in college courses could affect their high school grade point average and class standing. Students may need to plan for increased time to travel to and from a university. There is no guarantee they will get the courses they want. Students may experience some social discomfort when with older students. Also understand some college classes will cover material that would not be covered in a typical high school course. These classes are designed for adults.
