13 Buildings and Facilities
Any business needs a premises where they can operate, in Sainsbury’s case it also needs stores to sell its products. Buildings set up by the Sainsbury’s family are, a centre for mental health, centre for visual arts, Sainsbury’s laboratory, Sainsbury’s wing. When customers enter a building, facilities need to be there arranged for them for example front desks and meeting rooms. Sainsbury uses a variety of facilities such as cash registers, check out desks and space for Parking.

14 Materials and Waste The materials required in a business depend on the type of business that is being run and the individual people working there. For example a car making factory will need access to steel, paint and plastics etc. The waste that a business produces has to be taken away by another agency such as the council or a private company. Types of recyclable materials Sainsbury’s uses are bags, plastic, glass, cans and cardboard etc.

15 Plant and Machinery Like materials and buildings, each business has specific requirements for what type of plant and machinery that it might need. As the Sainsbury’s company is specifically a food retailer the machinery they use is purely for food processing.

16 Equipment including I.T
Equipment is essential for a business to run smoothly. In some organisations a lack of equipment means that a job or service cannot be carried out efficiently or at all. Some businesses have taken to using I.T to help support and enhance their methods of working. Equipment that Sainsbury's uses are things such as cash registers, pen, paper, computers etc

17 Planned maintenance & Refurbishment
SG Maintenance Services is a long term partner of Sainsbury’s, their planned maintenance includes mechanical, electrical, refrigeration, heating, ventilation and air conditioning. Mace was appointed in November 2005 to act as the cost consultant and employers agent on an 11-store refurbishment programme. The successful completion of this programme was further extended to oversee 34 stores min 2006 and 55 stores in

18 Emergency Provision The health and safety at work act 1974 requires organisations to draw up policies and provisions for what should happen in the event of an emergency within a building. Evacuation training must be given to employees. Clear instructions must be provided about what to do in the event of and emergency for example a fire or any other incident within the building. Equipment must be provided within the building such as fire alarms, fire escapes, and fire extinguishers.

19 Insurance All buildings owned or leased by a businesses must have insurance. A fee is paid each month and then protection is given to the business in the event that something happens such as A flood, fire, earthquake or storm that damages the building and stock. Damage to any equipment. Theft from the building. Vandalism. Leaking pipes. Collision by vehicles.

20 Security When employees have left the building it therefore is locked and secure. Sainsbury’s Technical Security Specialist Ray Waddington has been responsible for technical aspects related to the security of Sainsbury’s. as part of risk prevention measures, criminal analysis reports are made noting incidents throughout the stores. CCTV systems can provide valuable evidence that may be used in court so they are installed throughout Sainsbury’s stores.
