7th Grade Orientation April 24, 2017

Transitioning to 7th Grade
Met with 6th graders at WES and NLES earlier this month Orientation – tonight Tour of the building Pick locker Q & A with current UMS student Transition Day – May 12th Spend the day at UMS getting to meet new people, become familiar with the building, lockers, lunch procedures, etc. Registration – early August – practice your schedule and your locker

School Schedule School begins at 7:55 & ends at 2:50
There are 7 class periods + SSR + Lunch (30 min) + Homeroom/Enrichment The building opens for students beginning at 7:30 a.m. and remains open until 3:00 p.m. unless a student is involved in an extra-curricular activity or is receiving help from a staff member.

Homeroom Daily, first 5 minutes of the day for attendance & lunch count Meets twice/week opposite the lunch period 30 minutes Team building, anti-bullying, study skills, team competitions, test taking strategies, math and language arts games, etc.

Enrichment Meet 12 times (approx. 4 weeks)
Rotate through all Enrichments Variety of Enrichment Class Topics *Careers *American Ecosystems *Chinese * Traveling the World *Get Fit * Perspective Drawing *Spanish * Math By Design *Sound Sensation (by audition for 2nd semester)

Homework Harmony Expectations Approximately 30 min.- 2 hours daily
Homework must be completed on time or students will be assigned a Z.A.P. Zeros Aren’t Permitted (Z.A.P.) Students report to the Learning Center for lunch instead of the cafeteria. They complete the assignment(s) that were not turned in on time then go get their lunch. A maximum of 70% credit can be earned on late assignments.

Additional Support Quiet time to review for tests/quizzes LC is open 1/2 Hour Before School 7:30 – 12:00

Student Chromebooks Every student will be issued a school Chromebook & case at the beginning of the school year. Chromebooks must be charged at home nightly. Students should use them as a resource to work on assignments, projects, take tests/quizzes, check Harmony and record upcoming homework assignments, tests, quizzes, etc. Organization Period at 2:47 p.m. – all students review the day’s activities/assignments with their 7th period teacher to assist them in organizing for homework and studying.

*Volleyball *Wrestling *Golf *Cheerleading *Basketball *Track *Cross Country *Cheerleading * Tennis *Football (club) * Soccer (club) Students cannot stay after school. They may return to school 15 minutes prior to the start of a practice or 30 minutes prior to the start of a game.

Sports & Physicals Must have a PHYSICAL after April 1, 2017 to be good for the school year. Physical forms can be picked up in any school office or downloaded from the UMS website.

21st Century Scholarship Application
Must apply while a 7th or 8th grader Pays for 4 years of undergraduate college tuition at any participating public college/university in Indiana Anyone who qualifies for the federal school lunch or textbook assistance automatically qualifies. Look for more information at registration in August.

Communication UMS frequently uses Harmony and/or SchoolMessenger to send mass s, text messages or automated phone calls about various topics (i.e. school delays/closings, ISTEP+ testing, field trips, award programs, changes in athletic events, etc.). Transition Day May 12th 9:30am - UMS Physicals – must be completed ON/AFTER April 1, 2017 for the school year. Registration- All Schools On-line registration opens August 1st On-site registration August 3rd 12:30pm - 7:00pm First Day of School – August 15th

What do we do now? Please provide us with your address & cell phone number on the blue paper. Place it in the crate by the gym doors before leaving. Registration (on-line opens August 1st; on-site registration is on August 3rd). Students will get their schedules showing their classes/periods, locker combination, & find out which friends are in each class with them. Questions? Students will join you in the cafeteria after they have selected their lockers.
