Sensation and Perception
2
What are the five senses?
Warm Up What are the five senses? How is your behavior and thinking impacted by your senses?
3
Homework: 1 paragraph response
• Explain which of the following you think plays a bigger role in your life: -Absolute Threshold -Difference Threshold -Signal-Detection Theory -Sensory Adaptation BIG HINT: READ PGS in your textbook
4
Analyze the impact of Sensation on Psychology
Learning Objectives Analyze the impact of Sensation on Psychology Interpret Absolute Threshold, Difference Threshold, Signal Detection Theory, and Sensory Adaptation Build Connections to your own life
5
Brainstorming: How is Our Psychology Impacted by The senses
Has there been a time when you sensed something was going to happen? What led you to being able to sense this? Think of an example in which you experienced some type of difficulty as a result of your senses Which of the senses do you think is most important in determining your thoughts and behavior?
6
sensation Sensation: Messages are sent to the brain through sensory neurons Stimulus: External force that triggers a response Absolute Threshold: Weakest amount of stimulus that can be sensed Difference Threshold: Minimum amount of difference detected between two stimuli
7
Could we have more than 5 Senses???
What stimuli are people reacting to and how are they reacting to them? How are Alex’s thought processes and behavior being impacted by his senses? Do you think it is possible that you can feel what will happen in the future? Why or why not?
8
Check For Understanding
What parts of the human body would play a role in Sensation? Jot down 5 Stimuli in your life within the last week and next to each stimuli, record how you reacted Where does the “Flight or Fight response” come into play when talking about a stimulus? Write down an example of the concept of Absolute Threshold Write down an example of the concept of Difference Threshold
9
Examples Absolute Threshold: Listening to quite music
Responding to a beep when you hearing is tested Vision Test at doctor’s office Dogs hearing a whistle that humans can’t hear Difference Threshold Telling the difference between 2 different shades of blue Recognizing someone from a distance Being able to distinguish between two different instruments in a song
10
Charades: Responding To Stimuli
What is the stimulus that the volunteer is responding to?
11
Sensation Theories Signal Detection Theory: Method of distinguishing sensory stimuli through strength of stimulus, setting, and your physical state, mood and attitude Sensory Adaptation: Process by which we become more sensitive to weak stimuli and less sensitive to unchanging stimuli 1 Paragraph Response: Write about a time when you experienced Sensory Adaptation or Signal-Detection Theory and explain the advantages that occurred as a result of Sensory Adaptation/Signal Detection Theory
12
Sensory Adaptation Theory Example
I walked into a dark movie theater this weekend, and at first I couldn’t see anything…however, after I became accustomed to the movie theater, I was able to see the seats and other people in the theater
13
Biggie Example: Signal Detection Theory
Biggie usually goes running to the door when the doorbell rings. This weekend, I was watching the Florida and Tennessee Game, while petting Biggie, and the doorbell rang. Biggie was so focused on getting attention from me that he totally ignored the doorbell ringing
14
Examples of Signal Detection theory
Reading a book while other people around you are making noise Professional wine tasters Not being able to taste your dinner when you have a cold
15
Signal-Detection Experiment
I need three volunteers
16
Signal-Detection Experiment
Volunteer 1 and Volunteer 2 will read their paragraph to Volunteer 3 at the same time Volunteer 3 has to repeat back as many details about both speeches after Volunteer 1 and 2 read the speeches How does this experiment apply to signal- detection theory?
17
Identify the four Sensation Theories and explain what each means
Warm Up Identify the four Sensation Theories and explain what each means
18
Homework: 1 Paragraph Response
Explain which of the following you think plays a bigger role in your life: -Absolute Threshold -Difference Threshold -Signal-Detection Theory -Sensory Adaptation BIG HINT: READ PGS in your textbook
19
Engage in Collaborative Learning
Learning Objectives Engage in Collaborative Learning Interpret how Neuroplasticity impacts thoughts and behavior Analyze the role of Perception in Psychology
20
You Create and Act out the Scenario
Create a Scenario that demonstrates Absolute Threshold, Difference Threshold, Signal Detection Theory, or Sensory Adaptation In a group of 4-5, prepare a skit to act out the scenario for the class Be prepared to explain how the scenario demonstrates either Absolute Threshold, Signal Detection Theory or Sensory Adaptation
21
How does Perception impact your behavior and thoughts?
Brainstorming What is Perception? How does Perception impact your behavior and thoughts?
22
Connecting the Senses to perception: The Sixth Sense
How are the boy’s senses impacting his behavior and thoughts? What would you do if you were a therapist and a patient came into your office complaining about the same type of problem? What does this clip say about how the senses can impact people’s perception of the world around them?
23
Article on Neuroplasticity
Read the article on Neuroplasticity Answer the questions that follow
24
Perception Perception: Thought process of how we interpret information about the world around us, which is determined by what we have learned, experienced, and our attitudes What does it mean to see the glass half full? What does it mean to see the glass half empty? Most of the time, do you see the glass as half full or half empty? Do you think this is more a product of Nature or Nurture? Why do you think this?
25
Daredevil https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FyMJqp4071 o
How is this an example of Neuroplasticity? How is this an example of how Sensation can impact behavior and thoughts? How has Daredevil’s perception of his world been impacted by Sensation?
26
Eyes and Sight: How it all works
Eye: Sees the image Pupil: Opening through which the image is seen Retina: Location where the image is stored Optic Nerve: Sends the image from the eye to the brain
27
Check for Understanding: Pretend your Eye was your Phone Camera
What do the following parts of the Phone Represent? -Phone Camera? -Circle Dot on Phone? -Screen of your Phone? -Circuits in the Phone? -Computer in the Phone?
28
Exit ticket How did Helen Keller’s sensation impact her perception about the world around her?
29
What role does Sensation and Perception play in Psychology?
Warm Up What role does Sensation and Perception play in Psychology? Which one has a bigger role? Why do you think this?
30
Homework: Self-Reflection- Answer the Questions Below
What topic/concept/theory/idea/person do you think you can make the biggest connection with based on your own experiences and your own life? What connection can you make? What have you learned anything about yourself or the world around you that you didn’t know before? How has this impacted you? What topic/concept/theory/idea/person do you think is most interesting? Why?
31
Interpret the Gestalt Theory of Perception
Learning Objectives Interpret the Gestalt Theory of Perception Analyze how hearing, smell, and taste impacts people in different ways Build connections to your own life
32
Gestalt Theory of Perception
Gestalt Theory of Perception: Different people might look at the same things and perceive different images Gestalt School of Psychology: Started in 1920’s by German Scientists who were trying to emphasize the importance of differences in perception Belief that you have to look at the whole form rather than a part
