6 What social classes existed in ancient Rome?
Roman society was made up of a few rich people and many poor free people and slaves. What social classes existed in ancient Rome?

7 What was life like for the rich people?
They had elegant homes in the city and large country estates called villas. What was life like for the rich people?

8 They were excessive in the things they did
They were excessive in the things they did. They might eat 3 or 4 huge meals or feasts every day.

9 Their feasts would include exotic foods, and musicians, dancers, and poets to entertain them.

10 What was life like for the poor?
Most people lived in poorly built, rundown housing. Tall apartments had no running water, toilets, or kitchens. Waste was thrown out windows. Fires were frequent and devastating. What was life like for the poor?

12 Poor citizens depended on wheat for bread
Poor citizens depended on wheat for bread. If it wasn’t available due to a poor harvest or delayed shipment, the poor would riot. Emperors provided free grain to the poor to prevent riots. How did they survive?

13 What about their entertainment?
Spectacular shows called circuses were held in the Colosseum or in arenas also called circuses. What about their entertainment?

14 What were the shows like?

15 Most gladiators were slaves who had been captured in battle
Most gladiators were slaves who had been captured in battle. Some were free men and women who fought professionally. Who did the fighting?

16 How was the winner decided?
Battles ended when one gladiator was dead or dying, or was disarmed and on the ground. His life might be spared if he had fought well. A thumbs down meant to spare his life, a thumbs up meant death by sword. How was the winner decided?

17 What were Roman families like?
The Roman government valued families of the upper class citizens. Parents with more children were given free land or privileges. Adults with no children had penalties against them. All of this was so that rich families would have more children and continue their family names. What were Roman families like?

18 Were men and women treated equally?
No they were not. The father had absolute power over the entire household. He owned his wife, children, slaves, and furniture. He could even sell his children into slavery. Women from wealthier families had more freedoms and independence than women from poorer families. Were men and women treated equally?

19 Did ancient Romans have slaves?
Slavery was very common in ancient Rome. Almost all the wealthy families owned slaves. By 50 B.C. about 1/3 of Italy’s people were slaves. Did ancient Romans have slaves?

20 What were their lives like?
Household slaves received the best treatment. They helped raise children and provided companionship. What were their lives like?

21 Slaves who worked on farms might be chained together during the day while their worked and while they slept at night.

22 Some slaves worked under terrible conditions in the copper, tin and iron mines.

23 Gladiator slaves risked death every time they set for in the arenas.

24 Slaves were trained as rowers and used to power Roman warships.

25 Lucky slaves were able to save tips or wages and buy their freedom
