1 Food is broken down into nutrients used by body
The Digestive System Food enters the body Food is broken down into nutrients used by body Wastes leave body Food

2 3 Functions of the Digestive System What it DOES:
1. Food is broken down into what the body can use 2. Nutrients are absorbed by (taken into) the blood and carried throughout the body 3. Wastes are eliminated from (taken out of) the body kidshealth

3 Parts (Structures) of the Digestive System
parts explained

4 Parts (Structures) of the Digestive System

5 Pathway of Food in the digestive system
digestive system animation (at home) A closer look at each part National geographic animation

6 What substances does your body need to take in from food to survive?
Do Now: packet p 2 What substances does your body need to take in from food to survive? (Hint: There are 6 things.)

7 You are What You Eat! Name of nutrient____________ Use your textbook to answer the questions: What foods provide this nutrient? __________________________________________________________________ Why does your body need this nutrient? How is it used by the body ? What specific parts of the digestive system are used to digest this nutrient? Describe how the body digests this nutrient.

8 Textbook Page Vitamins and minerals p 72 Protein p 72
Carbohydrates p 69 Fats and oils p 70 Water p 75

9 Do NOW In your packet p 12, list which essential substances you think might be found in each food item  Food Item Essential Substances  Chicken Leg Soda Orange    Spinach  *Remember the six essential substances are: - Amino Acids (Protein) - Carbohydrates (Complex Carbohydrates and Simple Sugar) - Lipids (Fat) - Nucleic Acids (DNA) - Vitamins and Minerals - Water nutrition song

10 Where to find information about your group’s organ:
The Mouth – p. 84 The Esophagus – p. 85 The Stomach – pp The Small Intestine – pp The Large Intestine – p. 93 The Rectum – p. 93 The Anus – p. 93

11 Name: __________________ Date: __________
Mrs. Levin Science Team Digestive System Picture Comparison Notes Directions: For each of the object below, write the name of the part of the digestive system the object represents in the parentheses. Then, make a couple of brief notes explaining how each object represents that part of the digestive system. Scissors (__________) - ___________________________ _______________________________________________ Tube of Toothpaste (__________) -___________________ _______________________________________________

12 DO NOW Using your ruler, find the area to the nearest whole cm2 of one surface of the Lego cube. Hint: Area = length x width When you finish, find the area of ALL the surfaces. If you broke up the cube would there be more surface area or the same amount?

13 Surface area is the measure of how much exposed area a solid object has or the area of all of the
outside surfaces of a three-dimensional object. A cube has six square faces. Like dice. Let’s flatten the cube out. If each of those faces is 3 inches by 3 inches, then the area of each face is 3 × 3 = 9 square inches. And since there are six of them, the total surface area is = 54 square inches.

14 Do Now Discuss with your elbow buddy: Your stomach and esophagus use muscles to break up food. Why is this necessary in the stomach and the esophagus, once you have already swallowed food? Use the Lego cube to help you.

15 Do Now: Predict three foods which contain starch.
See if your elbow buddy agrees with you. Starch is a complex carbohydrate. You may need to check your notes for the kinds of foods which contain carbohydrates.

16 Do Now: PUT on apron – tie a bow. Predict which of these foods contain starch: Pasta, apple, potato, cabbage, cracker, bread, water, lettuce See if your elbow buddy agrees with you. Starch is a complex carbohydrate. You may need to check your notes for the kinds of foods which contain carbohydrates.

17 Do NOW PUT on apron – tie a bow. Make a prediction:
Does a chewed up cracker contain starch? Does a chewed up cracker contain more sugar or less sugar than a non-chewed up cracker? See if your elbow buddy agrees with you. Starch is a complex carbohydrate. You may need to check your notes for the kinds of foods which contain carbohydrates. Sugar is a simple carbohydrate.

18 Mechanical Digestion Mechanical means moving parts – mechanical pencil, mechanic, mechanical toys Food is broken into smaller pieces by moving parts or muscles. For example, the chewing of the teeth, churning of the stomach and mashing of the tongue. Surface area: the area of all the surfaces of an object Mechanical vs. chemical digestion animation

19 Chemical Digestion Chemicals break down food into smaller parts. Examples, saliva, pancreatic juices, and stomach juices(pepsin) feed the system Digestion song chemical vs mechanical digestion assignment-discovery-breaking-down-digestion-video.htm

20 Absorption absorption in the intestine Villi at 1 min

21 Bile Lab Questions What happened when you put the oil in the water?
What happened when you added the soap? Make a connection between this lab and how bile works in the human body.
