Reading TV and audio devices: a review

19 Pre-reading As we all know, TV set plays a very important role in our daily life. Would you please briefly describe the development of it?

Other group members try to describe the devices one by one, but can’t mention the words themselves. The time limit: half a minute (try to guess out as many words as you can. The group who can get the most words will be the winner.)

42 The development of science and technology brings comfort and convenience to our life, but it also brings us some negative effects.

48 scanning Mobile phones have become part of people’s life and there have been an argument about the safety of using them for many years. What’s your opinion? What might be the writer’s attitude towards mobile phone use? Why do you think so?

49 Read the passage again and fill in the form below:
Main points Supporting details The report is based on the findings of research that was carried out in Sweden, comparing 1,617 patients found to have brain tumors between 1997 and 2003 with the same number of healthy people. Using a mobile phone doubles the risk of developing brain cancer. The study, conducted with 200 mice, of which half were exposed to radiation while the other half did not receive any radiation, shows that the first half were found to have more than twice the cancer rate of the second half after eighteen months. Digital mobile phones are an actual danger. The reasons why there is no definite scientific evidence available now about the effects of mobile phones on people’s health. Enormous profit from the telecommunications industry prevents the bad results of findings from being revealed.

50 Limiting the amount of time you spend on your mobile phone
Moving the phone away from the body by using a handsfree kit or loudspeaking mode if available or why not consider texting as an alternative Checking the SAR of a phone before you buy it, although the power which a phone transmits is controlled by the network and in many situations is far lower than its maximum power Turning your phone off when you don’t need to use it … Possible solutions

51 Practice As we have learnt how to make a statement and how to support it, now you are expected to complete the project to make a list of pros and cons.

Unit 1 Living with technology Task

54 Skills building 1: Introduce some expressions which shows whether a statement is important or not.

55 Listen to the tape carefully
Identify the most important information and less important These days , I have been considering buying a new mobile phone. First of all, I like the ones with MP3 function in particular, this way, music will accompany me wherever I go. However, a major consideration is the radiation from the mobile phones, So, I prefer one that will do least harm to the user. Certainly, it doesn’t matter so much whether it could be used as a camera, for I think the picture a mobile phone could take is not clear enough and it wastes a large quantity of power.

56 Step 1: taking notes of requirements Part A. First Listening:
Weight and size: _____________________________ Cost:_______________________________________ Appearance:_________________________________ Translation:__________________________________ Pronunciation:________________________________ Extra functions:_______________________________

57 Further listening Which type does your uncle prefer,
a dictionary with English translation only ,or with two kinds of translation? Why? 2. Is your uncle willing to buy an modern one at a high price? 3. Does the function of pronunciation matter a lot according to your uncle? He prefers a dictionary with two kinds of translation, for he thinks that ,this way ,his son can look up words in both languages No, he doesn’t want to spend more than 700 yuan on it Yes , he thinks that will help his son to pronounce the word properly

58 Part B: Listen to the explanation of the function
of two new electronic dictionaries on sale Take notes of useful information in the following two columns Attention : this part only tells the relevant information, such as the languages, the cost, the word capacity etc. The rest information is included in Part C

59 Keys to part B Mark 204D: Languages: Word capacity:

Then you decide to make a telephone call to the customer service department for more information about the battery it uses and its guarantee.

64 asking for information by telephone
Skills building 2: asking for information by telephone

65 Try to make an appropriate telephone call
Read part 1 on page12 , ask the following question. 1. What should be paid attention to when making a telephone call? Be polite Be clear and to the point Ask for clarification if you don’t understand

66 Practise speaking with your partner.
