11

12 Why Should We Care? Public Health Concern – polluted water and air can have a negative effect on our health

13 Why Should We Care? Protecting land & resources – we rely on many plants and animals that may go extinct because of pollution/overuse - Endangered Species Act protects plants and animals that are close to extinction

14 Land Conservation Keep land open, and available for the public, and away from private owners and business that will pollute it

15 Environmental Goals Make sure air and water are clean
Dirty air and water not only makes humans sick, but can also kill wildlife populations Preserve trees and open space According to Urbanite, two large trees create enough oxygen for a family of four

16 What Are Some Ways the Gov’t Can Help the Environment?
Policy #1 - Recycling Recycling is good for the environment because it limits the amount of waste that goes into landfills.

17

18 What Are Some Ways the Gov’t Can Help the Environment?
Policy #2 - Tax Credits A tax credit is like a tax coupon. If you do something good for the government, you don’t have to pay as much tax. For example, a government might give tax credits to companies who install solar panels on their buildings.

19 Policy #3 - Pollution Limits
What Are Some Ways the Gov’t Can Help the Environment? Policy #3 - Pollution Limits The government creates limits on the amount of pollution a company can create during production. Clean Air Act of 1970 controls how much pollution a company can generate

20 Policy #4 - Fuel Standards
What Are Some Ways the Gov’t Can Help the Environment? Policy #4 - Fuel Standards When cars burn gasoline to run their engine, pollution is created. The government has set fuel standards so that cars must be able to run a set number of miles per gallon

21 Policy #5 – Land Purchases
What Are Some Ways the Gov’t Can Help the Environment? Policy #5 – Land Purchases The gov’t will purchase undeveloped land (land with nothing built on it) to preserve nature This reduces pollution and protects wildlife

22 Poster Time! You and your group mates are going to CREATE and PRESENT posters about the major environmental issues facing America today. Use the information sheet to create a poster that is informative and creative You will present this information to the class and they will complete a note sheet based off of it

23 Poster Guidelines What is the definition of your issue?
Why does your issue occur? What are the effects of this issue? Color and Drawings that display your issue Creativity and Effort

24 Quick /24/2017 Which of the issues you learned about today is the most crucial to fix for America? Why? Use specific information from the posters in your answer.

25 What is a region? A region is a group of cities, states, or countries that are neighbors.

26 What is regional cooperation?
Regional Cooperation is when two or more local, state, or national governments work together to solve a problem. The environment is interconnected, meaning different regions must work together to protect it.

27 Susquehanna River The Susquehanna is one of the most polluted rivers in the US, with most of the pollution coming from New York & Penn. This effects MD the most, even if we did not create the problem

28 Colorado River California, Nevada & other states take water from the Colorado River The river now runs dry in Mexico, where they rely on it too

29 Deep Water Horizon Oil Spill One of the worst environmental disasters in history. Answer questions 1-5 while you watch the video and be prepared to write a BCR after it is complete

30 Scenario #1 What is the government’s goal?
A man in Montana wanted to grow crops on land that he owned. However, because of the Endangered Species Act, the government said he could not. They said it would destroy other plants in the area that are eaten by an endangered species of bird. What is the government’s goal? What is the impact on citizens?

32 Scenario #2 What is the government’s goal?
The Clean Air Act of 1970 identified automobiles (cars) as one of the nation’s biggest polluters, so the government regulated the amount of emissions (pollution) that cars could create. It also placed a sales tax on SUVs that get less than 15 miles per gallon of gas (mpg). What is the government’s goal? What is the impact on citizens?
