1 FQ: What are the basic structures of the Urinary System (excretory)?
Today we are going to cover basic function and anatomy of the urinary system

2 Function Removal of liquid waste from the blood in the form of urine
Keep a stable balance of salts and other substances in the blood Produce erythropoietin, a hormone that aids the formation of red blood cells.

3 Basic parts of the System

9 How does it work? Basically…
Blood flows to the kidney via the renal artery It goes into the Glomerulus where waste filters across the membrane into the bowman’s capsule space This filtrate then travels down the proximal (closest to the capsule) tubule and gets filtered some more Filtrate travels down the loop of henle and gets filtered some more Urea travels through the distal tubule and to the collecting duct

10 Review of the kidney

12 The Case of the Crying Baby
Use the information provided in the reading, computers, and text books to help uncover the mystery behind baby Kayle’s symptoms

13 Diuretic = chemicals that increase urination
Urine Composition 95 % Water Contains urea and uric acid (characteristic smell) Can contain trace amino acids Diuretic = chemicals that increase urination

14 Disorders of the Urinary System
Many urinary problems can be solved by drinking enough water. So how much fluid does the average, healthy adult living in a temperate climate need? The Institute of Medicine determined that an adequate intake (AI) for men is roughly 3 liters (about 13 cups) of total beverages a day. The AI for women is 2.2 liters (about 9 cups) of total beverages a day.

15 Disorders of the Urinary System
Kidney Stones Cystitis Bladder Cancer Prostate enlargement Incontinence In your groups – assign each person a different disorder Look up the following information: What is this disorder Causes Signs / symptoms % of the population who get this, and age demographic Treatments / Cures
