25 What is Hinduism? Polytheistic Caste system Reincarnation Vegetarianism? Rituals of purification The Rig Veda tells the Hindu origin story Hinduism is a diverse religion found primarily in India. There is variation in local practices and the worship of particular deities. However, there are central tenants that unify it as one religion. The core of Hinduism is the belief in Brahman, the underlying universal life force that encompasses and embodies existence. According to Hindu scriptures, one's ignorance of the true nature of the self (atman) as one with Brahman is what traps one in the cycle of endless death and reincarnation (samsara). Thus, the highest goal of Hinduism is liberation (moksha) from the karmic cycle of death and rebirth.

66 Buddhism in India Buddhism is an Indian religion founded in northern India and based on the teachings of Siddhartha Gatauma, who is known as the Buddha (literally the Enlightened One or Awakened One). Buddhism arose in India and flourished during the reign of emperor Ashoka and others. It was then introduced and incorporated into the religious structure of other countries, including China, Korea, and Japan, largely due to the efforts of missionaries. Buddhism declined and disappeared from most regions of India around the 13th century, but not without leaving a significant impact. Buddhist practice continued in Himalayan areas like Bhutan, Sikkim, Ladakh, and Arunachal Pradesh. It has reemerged as a major faith in India in the past century.

73 Kumbh Mela: The world’s largest festival
Kumbh Mela (कुम्भ मेला) is a Hindu pilgrimage that occurs four times every twelve years and rotates among four locations: Prayag (Allahabad), Haridwar, Ujjain, and Nashik. Each twelve-year cycle includes one Maha Kumbh Mela (Great Kumbh Mela) at Prayag (at the confluence of the Ganges and Yamuna Rivers), which is attended by millions of people, making it the largest gathering anywhere in the world. It was actually started by King Harshvardhana of Ujjain. He used all his wealth to donate during this Mela to poor, learned people of all religions. After visiting the Kumbh Mela of 1895, Mark Twain wrote: "It is wonderful, the power of a faith like that, that can make multitudes upon multitudes of the old and weak and the young and frail enter without hesitation or complaint upon such incredible journeys and endure the resultant miseries without repining. It is done in love, or it is done in fear; I do not know which it is. No matter what the impulse is, the act born of it is beyond imagination marvelous to our kind of people, the cold whites."
