Australian Gun Control Law 1996
In 1996, 12 days after 35 people were killed and 18 people seriously wounded by a single person with a semiautomatic gun, the Australian state and federal government enacted uniform gun control laws Banned semi-automatic and pump-action rifles and shotguns Purchased back 643,726 newly prohibited guns More than 60,000 guns voluntarily turned in Overall more than 700,000 guns recovered from 12 million Australians Mandatory registration of all firearms Private sales of guns banned Police review of every gun transfer by licensed dealers, looking for a legitimate reason for purchase Chapman, S, Alpers, P, Agho, K, Jones, M.
