Background – Where we have come from
1996 the Government changed the nature of the claim from a Raupatu settlement to a Global settlement, this was rejected by Whakatōhea 2003 an interim working party with hapū support developed Te Ara Tono mō te Raupatu which was adopted by the Iwi in 2007. Considerable effort has been made by Tu Ake Whakatōhea Collective to gain hapu and iwi support for a hapu led settlement process. Resulting in a process and structure to complete Pre Settlement with the Crown. In July 2016, Iwi on the tribal register were asked to vote to approve the process and structure – Deed of Mandate In October 2016 Iwi were then asked to appoint their Hapu and Marae delegates to the newly created Whakatohea Pre Settlement Claims Trust December the Crown then approved the Whakatōhea Pre-Settlement Claims Trust by Endorsing the Deed of Mandate

Summary The settlement is about our honouring our Tipuna and the consequences of the raupatu. It is also about honouring our uri and creating a better future for whanau, hapu and our Iwi. Our strategy for the settlement is based on Reconciliation with Society, Regeneration of Capacity, and Accelerating Whakatōhea's vision for prosperity and wellbeing. Recognition of Whakatōhea rangatiratanga with the support of an enabling settlement package will allow Whakatōhea to assume a greater responsibility for Iwi development and regional development.
