2 Introduction Recall Old Testament history:
Moses delivers Israel from Egyptian bondage. God seeks to fulfill nation and land promise He gave to Abraham: Numbers 14 Wilderness wanderings: Num. 14:20-38 Moses warnings: blessings for obedience, curses for disobedience: Lev. 26; Deut. 7:12-24; 28 Division of the kingdom upon the death of King Solomon (~931 B.C.): Divided kingdom: Israel & Judah.

3 Introduction Time of Jeremiah: 627-586 B.C.
Often called the “weeping prophet” if Israel. People of Judah and Jerusalem, due to their own arrogance and pride, refused to accept God’s corrective message. They were about to suffer a “disaster” and “great destruction” (Jer. 6:1). Every level of society had fallen into sin: Jer. 6:14 But they refused to admit their sin: Jer. 6:15; 8:12

4 Introduction God says of the people: they “were not at all ashamed, neither could they blush.” Jer. 6:15 Indicates the depth they had fallen to. There’s hope for the sinner who feels shame over his sin. Blush: “to become red in the face from shame, embarrassment.” Blushing is not something to hide, it is a badge of honor!

5 Neither Could They Blush Jeremiah 6:15

6 Blushing is an index of character
People taught and trained in the righteousness of God recognize the shame of sin. Those not bothered by sin can no longer blush: “But shame shall be the legacy of fools.” Prov. 3:35 In today’s society the blushing cheek is deemed naïve and old fashioned. Today it seems that sin is never the fault of the sinner! Neither Could They Blush

7 One must be trained to blush
Blushing may be more pronounced in some versus others. Nature vs. nurture? Training is essential in learning how to blush! Many parents miserably fail to teach their children to blush, because they’ve lost the ability themselves! Are you setting the right example to your children? Neither Could They Blush

8 Neither Could They Blush
Blushing can be lost Had Judah always been unable to blush? No! They could in the days of Hezekiah and Josiah. Losing the ability to blush comes when we consistently violate our conscience by engaging in sin. Let us take heed! Rom. 15:4 We can lose our ability to blush when we reject the ways of God and embrace the ways of the world: 2 Pet. 2:20-22 Neither Could They Blush

9 Conclusion May the Lord keep helping us retain the ability to blush. How about you? Do the ways of the world still make you blush? If you’ve lost the ability to blush you can regain it by cleansing your conscience in the sight of God! Hebrews 9:14: “how much more shall the blood of Christ, who through the eternal Spirit offered Himself without spot to God, cleanse your conscience from dead works to serve the living God?” 2 Corinthians 7:1: “Therefore, having these promises, beloved, let us cleanse ourselves from all filthiness of the flesh and spirit, perfecting holiness in the fear of God.”
