Abstinence The most dependable way to avoid getting pregnant and contracting an STD (sexually transmitted disease) Abstinence is your choice Teens who choose to be sexually active should consider contraception (birth control)

Teens and sex Never have sex without protection!
Best birth control methods for teens are condoms and the pill. A single act of sexual intercourse without protection can lead to pregnancy or an STD infection. Teens not using birth control have 90% chance of conceiving a pregnancy within one year.

Provides a physical barrier to protect against STD’s Provides a physical barrier to prevent sperm from entering female vagina. Best when used with spermicide.

Talk to your parents about using the pill to prevent pregnancy while being a sexually active teen. Consult your family physician and obgyn.

The pill Most popular form of birth control with teenage girls.
Releases small amounts of estrogen and progesterone hormones. These small amounts of hormones are enough to interrupt female ovulation.

Teen girls and sex If you are sexually active
Consult with your parents Talk to your family doctor and obgyn for birth control methods and STD screening. Don’t be shy about having a condom on hand and asking your partner to use it. If your partner is not comfortable using a condom, don’t have sex.
