Types of Parents Birth-biologically becoming a child’s parent.
Marriage-becoming a child’s parent by marrying his/her parent. Adoption-legally becoming a child’s parent. Foster/Guardianship-providing a substitute family. FW 1.2

What Changes Come With Parenthood?
Parenthood begins with having a child by birth, marriage, foster or adoption. Changes that occur are a change in lifestyle New Responsibilities Emotional Adjustments Changes in Relationships Changes at Work SWBAT examine possible demands of parenting and become informed on how a person could make a smooth transition into parenting.

Making Decisions About Parenthood
You must have a clear picture of what parenthood is before you decide to become a parent. You need to realistically ask yourself if you are ready for parenthood. You must have emotional maturity to be able to handle the changes that parenthood brings. SWBAT examine possible demands of parenting and become informed on how a person could make a smooth transition into parenting.

What factors should you consider before becoming a parent?
Do you want a child for the right reasons? Is your relationship stable? Do you have enough support? Are you able to devote your entire attention to an infant without receiving any attention in return? Can you realistically afford it? Do you know how to parent?

Unsound Reasons for Parenthood
Our marriage is in trouble. Having a baby will not solve your problems. A baby is someone who will love me and belong to me. I feel like I’m nobody. Being a parent will make me somebody. I want someone who will take care of me when I’m old. Our parents want grandchildren SWBAT examine possible demands of parenting and become informed on how a person could make a smooth transition into parenting.

Sound Reasons to Become a Parent
Having children will add depth to our relationship, which is already strong. I want to give a baby my care and love. I feel good about myself and believe that parenthood will be a rewarding experience. I want to experience the special bond between parent and child, which lasts a lifetime. I love children, and I want to be a parent. SWBAT examine possible demands of parenting and become informed on how a person could make a smooth transition into parenting.

Negative: Side Effects Dizziness Diarrhea Lung Problems Nausea Multiple Births The more children a pregnant woman carries, the more difficult it is for them all to survive. The more babies the lower the birth weight. The more babies the harder it is for the mother to carry them full term. Positive: The medication may stimulate the woman’s body to function properly in preparation of conception. The woman may finally get pregnant. FW 1.7.1

Options for Infertile Couples
Adoption: the couple legally takes all responsibilities and rights for raising a child already born or in the womb. Surrogate Mother: (substitute mother). A woman who becomes pregnant for another couple. She may carry a couple’s fertilized egg that was removed from the biological mother because she is unable to carry the baby to completion. A surrogate may be artificially inseminated with sperm from the husband of an infertile woman. This process takes legal arrangements and must meet state law. FW 1.7.1

In Vitro Fertilization: a process that is used when a woman has damaged Fallopian tubes that prevent pregnancy. In a small glass dish, a doctor combines a mature egg from the woman and combines it with the sperm from her husband. If fertilization occurs, the doctor places the zygote in the woman’s uterus. If the zygote attaches itself to the uterus a normal pregnancy takes place. Artificial Insemination: a process by which the doctor injects sperm into a woman’s uterus with a special needle. The sperm may be the husbands or a donor. FW 1.7.1

Ovum Transfer The procedure uses an egg taken from a female donor through in vitro fertilization. It may be used by other women who lack working ovaries or have inherited disorders. FW 1.7.1

As more technological advances are made, there are many questions raised about the ethics involved in helping to make babies. Ethical Impacts Can people afford multiples? Societal Ramifications Public assistance Technology has improved creating more multiple births Health Problems for mom and baby. Ovum transfers and surrogate mothers are especially controversial. Rewards of Parenthood Many joys are brought by parenthood
There is nothing quite like a baby’s first smile or hearing a three year old say “I love you”. Parents are able to see the world differently through their child’s eyes as they discover it. Raising children can give parents a great sense of accomplishment. SWBAT examine possible demands of parenting and become informed on how a person could make a smooth transition into parenting.

Whatever the decision, parents will need good money management skills, as well as managing other resources.
