Albert Einstein German physicist gave new ideas on space, time, energy and matter Theory of Relativity Sigmund Freud Austrian physician who treated patients with psychological problems Theory that human behavior is irrational The unconscious mind

New Art Artists moved away from earlier realism to create new forms of art Dadaism Meant to be absurd and meaningless Surrealism Tried to link dreams to the real world Music steps out Jazz explodes in America

Society Changes Becomes more open and young people break with the past and experiment with values Women take new roles Receive right to vote (1920) Cut their hair short Wear less clothing Smoke and Drink in public Speak out against the “woman’s role” in the home

Automobile becomes available to all Allows to move farther from work Gives leisure time (VACATIONS!!!!!!!) Airplane for normal travel Major airlines created at this point Popular entertainment Radios for entertainment 1920 KDKA in Pittsburg 1st commercial radio station Movies for fun

The World As One Advances in science and the industrial fields bring the world closer together Countries now more interdependent on each other economically Global happiness becomes dependent on the economic well-being of all major nations
