Neil Craig HSE Head of Field Operations Good morning an a very warm welcome to this inaugural conference of the South Wales Safety Group Alliance. This conference sees an unprecedented collaboration between the South Wales Branch of IOSH, the Wales branch of International Institute of Risk and Safety Management, the South Wales Construction Safety Group and the Occupation Health and Safety Groups of Cardiff and South East Wales and Swansea and West Wales. All coming together with strategic aim of improving the safety, health and well being of workers in South Wales.

Compelling business case for the benefits a good health and safety culture can bring. Sharing examples of good practice to achieve common understanding of what proportionate health and safety looks like. Health and safety professionals have an important role to play. Helping businesses of all sizes get it right in an efficient and effective way will build trust and improve standards.

Pembrokeshire Estates Engagement Project Partnership between IOSH West Wales, MHPA, Healthy Working Wales, Pembrokeshire County Council Corporate Safety Unit, The Institute of Occupational Health and Safety (IOSH) West Wales, Pembrokeshire County Council Health and Safety Enforcement Team and HSE Raise awareness and deliver advice, help, guidance and free training on risks specific to SME’s located at nine industrial estates within the South Pembrokeshire area Enable business of all sizes to discuss and share solutions to key risks, tackling the fear of health and safety, developing economic growth and providing a support legacy Covered over 200 businesses in 9 industrial estates within a 10 mile radius 1340 local employees covered Benefits – Opportunity over a period of time to access assistance Free training on SME defined topics Sharing of best practice – large and small businesses Provision of further avenues of support Benefits to the partners that took part Repeatable template for others to follow

12 Keeping pace with change – waste and recycling
New and novel waste treatment and recycling processing technologies being developed. Increasing amounts of innovation e.g. landfill mining Increasingly complex and diverse sector with many interfaces, participants and cultures, new entrants to sector, sub-contractors and existing companies diversifying, may lack experience and skills Increased automation, robotics and computer control Lack of knowledge about OSH effects of new materials now being recycled (previously landfilled), potential for increased exposures and risk of long-latency hazards Sector is very vulnerable to global demand, prices and incentives/ government/EU policy
