The role of non government organisations based in Australia in promoting global health and sustainable human development

3 Revise key terms Global Health- the health of populations in a worldwide context that goes beyond the perspectives and concerns of individual countries. Global health is about an international collaborative approach to achieving equity in health for all worldwide.

4 Revise Key Terms Human Development- Creating an environment in which people can develop to their full potential and lead productive, creative lives in accord with their needs and interests. It is about expanding people’s choices and enhancing capabilities(the range of things people canbe and do), hanving access to knowledge, health and a decent standard of living and participating in the life of the community and decisions affecting their lives.

5 Revise terms Sustainable Human Development- Refers to a process of people striving to reach their full potential, lead more productive lives, expand their choices and meet their needs without compromising the opportunities for future generations to meet their own needs.

6 The role of literacy in promoting health and sustainable human development
Literacy is a human right and a basic tool for social, mental and physical health. It is essential for enabling education, empowerment and gender equality, reducing child mortality and ensuring sustainable development. People who are literate have a greater knowledge of health.

8 Food Security The state in which all personsobtain nutritionally adequate , culturally appropriate, safe food regularly through local non emergency services.

9 Food Security Hunger is the number one risk to health worldwide. Food is necessary for both survival and physical and intellectual development at all stages of life. Undernutrition stunts growth and development, increase the risk of infection and can cause low birth weight, anaemia and brain damage.

11 HIV/AIDS Key Terms AIDS- Acquired immune deficiency syndrome is the most advanced stages of HIV infection Human Immunodeficiency virus(HIV)- an infection that results in the gradual depletion and weakening of the immune system, resulting in susceptibility to other infections such as pneumonia and tuberculosisi. Antiretroviral therapy- treatment that slows the progress of HIV

12 HIV/AIDS HIV?AIDS continues to be one of the biggest global threats to development and directly impacts on a person’s health and their ability to participate within their family and community. Children who are HIV positive face poverty, undernutrition, discrimination, inequality and inadequate access to services and education. Programs must address treatment as well as prevention.

14 Malaria Malaria is an entirely preventable and treatable disease when interventions are correctly implemented. Most affected are pregnant women and children under 5. Children who survive the disease may suffer with physical and mental impairments, such as poor growth and development.

16 Immunisation Many diseases can easily be prevented through immunisation, such as measles, TB, tetanus and polio .Protections through immunisation programs are much cheaper than treating and hospitalising people who are sick. Measles is one of the most infectious viruses to humans and is easily prevented through immunisation.

18 Water and Sanitation Drinking unsafe water or not having access to basic sanitation can result in the spread of cholera, malaria and hookworm. Unsanitary environments include overcrowded living conditions, poor drainage, limited access to resources for washing and cooking, and toilet facilities, inappropriate housing, lack of developed sewerage systems and insufficient knowledge regarding the spread of infectious diseases.
