HW: Graphic Organizer, Organelles Classwork (Wed.)
Monday February 27, 2017 I can: understand the functions and structures of 8 organelles Agenda (10) Catalyst (25) GN: Cells and Organelles (5) Introduce Project (40) IP & Conferences (5) Exit Ticket Catalyst What are the 4 classes of biomolecules? Which 2 biomolecules give us energy (indicate which is short-term and which is long-term)? HW: Graphic Organizer, Organelles Classwork (Wed.) Organelles Project due Friday 3/3

The cell is the basic unit of life.
5
Cell Theory All living things are composed of cells.
Cells are the basic units of structure and function in living things. New cells are produced from existing cells.
6
Comparing the Cell to a Factory
Just like a factory, a cell must: have a source of energy make a product(s) maintain, repair themselves, and grow try to expand to new locations
7
Organelles are specialized structures in cells that perform specific functions.
8
main office of the factory
Nucleus The nucleus is the control center of the cell contains nearly all the cell’s DNA, or instructions for the cell main office of the factory
9
Cytoplasm The cytoplasm is the portion of the cell outside of the nucleus. gel-like substance in which many chemical reactions occur
10
assembly line in the factory
(tiny dots) Ribosomes Ribosomes are where proteins are assembled. follow directions from the nucleus assembly line in the factory
11
storage closet in the factory
Vacuole The vacuole is a saclike structure that stores materials such as water, salts, proteins, and carbohydrates. much larger in plants that in animal cells storage closet in the factory
12
the factory’s power source
Mitochondria Mitochondria convert the chemical energy stored in glucose into a usable form (ATP). enclosed by a double membrane powerhouse of the cell the factory’s power source
13
the factory’s solar panels
Chloroplast Chloroplasts capture the energy from sunlight and store it in the bonds of glucose. chloroplasts do photosynthesis only found in plants contain green pigment the factory’s solar panels
14
Cell (Plasma) Membrane
The outer border of every cell that regulates what enters and leaves.
15
Cell Wall The tough outermost layer of plant cells that provides support and protection for the cell. the cell wall is outside of the cell membrane and is made of cellulose cell membrane

Write on your board… Which two organelles are ONLY found in plant cells? chloroplast cell wall
29
Write on your board… Which organelle contains the cell’s DNA or instructions?
30
Write on your board… Which organelle regulates what enters and leaves the cell?
31
Write on your board… Where would a plant cell store the sugars it makes during photosynthesis?
32
Write on your board… Which organelle performs photosynthesis to store energy in the bonds of glucose?
33
Exit Ticket Match each organelle to its function (1 pt each): 1. ___ chloroplast A. control center of cell 2. ___ ribosome B. storage center 3. ___ nucleus C. does photosynthesis 4. ___ vacuole D. boundary of cell 5. ___ cell membrane E. makes proteins 6. Describe 3 differences between plant and animal cells (3 pts).
34
1. Cell Analogies Book Individually Choose plant or animal cell
Write children’s book comparing organelles to everyday objects
35
2. 3D Cell Model Project In pairs or individually
Make a model of plant or animal cell Need organelle key & list of functions
36
3. The Organelle Rap 2-4 people
Mention 8 organelles and function of each At least 10 lines **BONUS POINTS if present to class on Friday**
37
4. Visiting the Cell – Travel Brochure
Individually Describing cell as attraction (zoo, mall, farm, etc.) Ex) “Come to the ribosome, we’ll make whatever kind of ice cream sundae you like!”
38
5. Cell Song Video Project
2-4 people Choose 1 of 3 songs (lyrics provided) All people in video at some point
39
