3 CPR/First Aid Training
Group 3 January 27th

4 Department of Chemistry
Dr. David Watson University of Buffalo Professor Department of Chemistry Hosted By: Dr. Gawalt The Watson Research Group uses coordination chemistry, organic chemistry, and linker-assisted assembly to organize nanometer- scale entities into composite materials and heterostructures. Current research projects focus on surface chemistry, materials assembly, and interfacial electron-transfer reactivity. Topic: Excited-State Electron Transfer in Quantum Dot Heterostructures February 3rd

5 February 10th *Lecture at 2 PM
Dr. Eric Breitung Metropolitan Museum of Art Research Scientist Hosted By: PLU Students Dr. Breitung helps art conservators preserve the priceless works of art at New York's Metropolitan Museum of Art. He studies the ways that various art materials age and degrade, and he consults with the museum's building engineers to produce an environment that helps prevent damage to everything from modern artwork made from polymers to ancient pieces made from metal. His work requires him to use a variety of instruments to perform organic analysis, but he also gives tours to classes and other members of the public. Topic: Keeping the Art from Crumbling: Preventive Art Conservation Science at the Metropolitan Museum of Art February 10th *Lecture at 2 PM

6 February 17th [Professor] [bio] Topic: Hosted By: [University] [Title]
[Department] Hosted By: [bio] Topic: February 17th

7 Hosted By: Dr. Van Stipdonk
Dr. Sam Molesworth Pfizer Senior Manager Pharmaceuticals Hosted By: Dr. Van Stipdonk Topic: Insights into the Generic Drug Development Process February 24th

8 Dr. Dhandapani Venkataraman
UMass Amherst Professor Organic and Materials Chemistry Hosted By: Dr. Vaidyanathan The Venkataraman Research Group focuses on catalysis, nanoscale segregated semiconductor morphologies in organic and hybrid photovoltaic cells, chiroptical properties of helical electroactive molecules, proton transport in rigid scaffolds, and hydrogen production through photoelectrocatalysis. Topic: Polymer Nanoparticle Assemblies March 3rd

9 Spring Break March 10th

10 Naval Research Laboratory
Dr. Debra Rolison ACS Fellow Naval Research Laboratory Physical Chemist Chemistry Division Hosted By: Dr. Aitken Dr. Rolison’s research involves the design, synthesis, characterization, and application of nano-structured material for rate-critical applications that encompass catalysis, energy storage and conversion, biomolecular composites, porous magnets, and sensors. She has received honors for developing two metaphoric guides for non- S&T: design of multi-functional nano-architectures and the importance of nothing and disorder for high-performance nano-materials. Topic: TBA March 13th & March 14th

11 Chemistry and Chemical Biology
David Vaccarello Cornell University Graduate Student Chemistry and Chemical Biology Hosted By: Dr. Aitken Vaccarello received his undergraduate degree from Duquesne University in Now, his research area is polyolefins. The Coates Research Group’s research in polyolefins focuses on the design of homogeneous polymerization catalysts, and the characterization of the polymer architectures they produces. Topic: A Regiodivergent Approach to the Syntheses of Carbasugars March 17th

12 Dr. Julie Liu Purdue University Associate Professor Chemical Engineering Hosted By: Dr. Gawalt Prof. Liu's research focuses on developing protein-based biomaterials for application in tissue engineering and regenerative medicine. Prof. Liu has developed a family of recombinant proteins that incorporate structural repeats to confer mechanical properties and bioactive domains to elicit the desired cell response. To fully utilize these proteins in tissue engineering applications, her research has investigated the relationship between amino acid sequence and subsequent function. Topic: Protein-based Biomaterials for Stem Cell Differentiation and Surgical Adhesive Applications March 24th

13 Chemistry/Biochemistry
Dr. Catherine Oertel Oberlin College Associate Professor Chemistry/Biochemistry Hosted By: Dr. Aitken Pittcon Lecturer Research in the Oertel lab is in the area of inorganic materials chemistry, with projects focusing on both synthesis of new materials and conservation of historic materials. They synthesize hybrid inorganic- organic network compounds. A second area of research uses methods of materials chemistry to study the causes and mechanisms of corrosion of historic organ pipes. Topic 30th: Inspired by Corrosion: Synthesis and Crystal Chemistry of Lead Oxide Carboxylates Topic 31st: Music and Materials: Art and Science of Organ Pipe Metal March 30th & March 31st

14 April 7th Dr. Christine Marsh Chemist/Forensic Examiner
Hosted By: PLU Students Topic: Forensic Analysis of Explosives April 7th

15 Easter Break No Seminar
April 14th

16 April 21st Sophia Hayes Washington University in St. Louis Professor
Department of Chemistry Hosted By: Jennifer Glenn The Hayes Research Group focuses on the unique combination of optical irradiation with solid-state NMR studies. The goal of their research is a basic understanding of the structure and properties of different types of inorganic systems, including semiconductors and other optically and electronically active materials. Topic: Solid-State NMR of Quadrupolar Nuclei – A Window into Materials Chemistry April 21st

17 Dr. Irene McGee Covestro LLC Vice President Health, Safety, Environment, and Quality (HSEQ) Hosted By: Safety Committee Dr. McGee is responsible for the overall management of the regional HSEQ organization, which includes Product Safety & Regulatory Affairs, Distribution Safety, Worker Safety, Security, HSEQ Management Systems and Customer Complaint Management. She also leads the central testing laboratories for the company. Topic: Safety and Industry April 28th
