Level 1 & 2 Verification in 2015
National 1 and 2 Courses and Units Central Verification Event in February, 37 centres were verified Visiting Verification during February/March, 18 centres visited Awards at SCQF Level 1 and 2 Visiting Verification during April/May, 6 centres selected for visits It’s worth pointing out that the National 1 and 2 Courses and Units are handled differently and separately from the Awards. Centres that are selected for National 1 and 2 verification can select which Units to use in their evidence sample but they should come from the National 1 and 2 group of Units and Courses. Obviously, where centres are selected for verification for an Award, the verifier will expect to see a sample of Unit evidence from the Award.

Level 1 & 2 Verification in 2015
Central Verification is carried out by Nominees, overseen by Team Leaders, STL and PV Nominees names are put forward by LAs A Nominee training session was held in Nov and the Central Verification Event took place in Feb Visiting Verification is carried out by Team Leaders, STL and PV The Nominees are put forward by the Local Authorities but not all Local Authorities have nominated someone for National 1 and 2. Usually we have one Team Leader for every 4 or 5 Nominees. The Nominees time is paid for by their LA, the Team Leaders, Senior Team Leader and Principal Verifier are all paid for by SQA. This year we had 25 Nominees and 6 Team Leaders Although all of the Nominees are invited to attend the training in November, only a dozen or so are actually required for the verification event.

Level 1 & 2 Verification in 2015
There are three possible outcomes to a verification activity: Accepted Accepted with recommendations Not accepted There have been no ‘not accepted’ judgements made so far this year at level 1 and 2 Every centre that is subject to verification will receive a verification report. It is worth emphasising that at Level 1 and 2 we try to see the verification process as a development activity aimed at helping centres and giving feedback. Where possible we will identify recommendations rather than apply the ‘not accepted’ judgement.

Key messages Assessment approaches Assessment Judgements General comments The ‘Awards’ category of provision are not seen as being part of the National 1 and 2 suite. ‘Awards’ are usually referred to within CfE as ‘Wider Achievement’. There are several Awards now available at SCQF level 1 and 2 as shown by this list. The Scottish Studies Award is currently under development but will be available for centres by August 2015.

Level 1 & 2 Verification in 2015
Examples of good practice Those of you involved last year will remember that we held two rounds of CV last year and we covered just under 30 centres in each round. This year we intend to try a mixture of CV and VV for National 1 and 2. This should allow us to see which approach is most beneficial for centres and should influence the approach we adopt in future years. Both CV and VV will take place in February 2015 and we will try and cover 40 centres through CV and a further 20 centres through VV. The CV events will be much the same as last year, involving Nominees and Team Leaders reviewing evidence submitted by centres and completing reports. The VV will not involve Nominees, it will be carried out by the Principal Verifier, Senior Team Leader and Team Leaders.
